Saw a Blue Grosbeak today - male - and likely a female yesterday. Got a picture, but it isn't too great of quality as the sun wasn't in a good place. In any case, first one I've seen, although we had a nice group of 3-4 mated pair of Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks last April through early May. We've seen Indigo Buntings before as well, but this was definitely the Blue Grosbeak.

Anyway, thought the sighting might be of interest and maybe the thread could be one of those "perpetual" threads for folks who enjoy birdwatching.

Here's one of the rose-breasted fellows from last year from later in the afternoon with a better light angle:

Took this pic with my phone of a Gray Catbird. There are a pair nesting nearby in the shrubs. It's rare that you ever seen them out in the open like this. That is a nice pic of the Rose-breasted. We get one once in awhile in the winter here in Bladen. We've had Blue's for several weeks now but no Indigo's.

Our Wood Thrush is back and singing in the same general area as last year. I think they have one of the most distinctive melodies and song.

Cool pix. I know next to nothing about birds, but we live on the corner of a small neighborhood lake and love to watch them. This 'feeder' was one of the branches in a tree in early March.

Saw two male rose crested grosbeaks this morning, but they flew off when I stood up to try to get a picture. I'd love to know whether they are from the same small group as last year. They migrate each year between Central America and the Caribbean Islands up into New England and Southern Canada (some in the Appalachians). Last Spring, they hung around for, oh, maybe a week to ten days or so, I guess, as a migration rest stop.

had a large pileated woodpecker next tp the porch this morning, 8 feet from my head. flew away before the camera was out...

We’ve got all kinds of woodpeckers but I’ve never seen a Pileated Woodpecker on our property unfortunately.

I'm still trying to figure out what species of hawk that is sitting by the hummingbird feeder? I'm guessing Red-shouldered hawk?

Another bird...
My wife is an avid birder. These birds have an affinity for Spanish moss and it was only a matter of a day or two after she had hung the moss that these birds discovered it and began nesting. Northern Parula's.

We've got a ton of birds here. Have seen bald eagles twice, some large hawks, a couple of wild turkeys & have heard owls.

We have one Blue Jay & a Red bellied Woodpecker that like to have the feeder to themselves, but all manner of little birds hang out, too. A pair of Cardinals, a White-breasted Nuthatch, Eastern bluebirds, Vireos, etc. Two Ruby-throated Hummingbirds so far. Never seen so many birds hanging out right at my front porch before in my life. Gonna hafta do some reading up.

the other day at early twilight, i saw a hummingbird indulging at the feeder i had just filled for the first time since fall...

My first guess would be a Cooper's Hawk. They will certainly thin out the songbirds and baby Bunnies

I had one chase my chickens around the backyard one afternoon.

It actually put a shallow, but long gash in one bird's back.

Had to put my phone camera up to a binocular lens to catch this. Baby Blue Bird

I've noticed my feeders are not being emptied much in last week or so because birds are finding more natural food now. Nothing to do with Hawks in my case as feeders are right outside my computer room window.

We have a nesting pair in our area this year and I'm pretty sure that is where most of the squirrels have gone. I spent a few years trying to thin them out. Last year was probably a banner year for squirrels and then this year, I only see a couple occasionally. I've only killed one squirrel this year and that is because he was on the house. My bird feeders are lasting much longer also. I have seen evidence of the Hawks killing other birds though.

There is a nesting pair of those jokers that live near me. I saw them devouring squirrels or rabbits the other evening. I guess 3 weeks or so ago one had a snake in its talons. One of the neighbors said he found remains of something that killed a copperhead in the area I saw them snag it.

Googling makes me think you are right on. Botha bout the species, and what is happening to the bunnies and birds....

I realize everyone-gotta-eat, and circle-of-life and all that, but I like the bunnies and songbirds more than I like Mr. & Mrs. Murderwing.

If any come around your house, just point them in my direction; I would be happy to have them.

My wife was concerned that the Bluebirds were going to be a meal. I told her the bird had eyes on something larger on the ground.
The bluebirds are still in the yard safe and sound.

If anyone wants to merge this thread with the “bird-feeder” thread.... it would seem to fit.

Also, back at school in detroit, some kind predatory birds were out there snatching up smaller birds, rats, etc.
They liked to sit on the high ledges of our building and eat. But they don't usually eat the heads because they're too tough or something... so they just dropped the heads down the side of the building.
And THAT is a sight to see when some fancy dressed person is walking along and a rat head just splats down in front of them.
