Idaho Republican Senator James Risch introduced the ATF Transparency Act on Thursday, looking to improve the fairness of the ATF, increase agency transparency, and process applications quicker.

"The ATF’s huge backlog of applications is triggered by a burdensome, seemingly endless process that fails to allow citizens access to an appeals process in the event of a wrongful denial," Risch told Fox News Digital.

Risch’s bill would establish an appeals process within the ATF for Americans whose background checks were denied and requires the ATF to give National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) transaction numbers as well as cover attorney fees for successful appeals.

The bill turns the ATF’s stated 90-day application turnaround goal into a hard 90-day deadline that would automatically approve the application if the deadline is not met.

The legislation would also require both the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general to report the number of National Firearms Act items that are involved in unfinished NICS background checks between 2014 and 2021, as well as give recommendations to the agency to minimize the number of background checks in limbo.

While a step in the right direction. It’s too little too late. The reason the ATF has gotten so out of control is because they have gone unchecked for so long. Going unchecked includes every president and head of the DOJ, not just the dems. The repubs have had several opportunities to step in, but they have squandered every opportunity.

If Republicans had wanted to pass something like this, they could have done so during the 1st two years of Trump's presidency -- since they controlled the House, the Senate, AND the White House.

I mention this because introduction during a split congress where the White House can also use the veto ... is a tell-tale sign of mere posturing/pandering for votes.

Government agencies never relinquish power they only gain it. this is DOA.
Also the Republicans miss spelled closure when naming their pandering bill.

These background checks are only good at the time they are performed. Like a driver license, one you leave the DMV you drive responsibly or like a maniac.
They will complain about the SC church murderer who was approved after the waiting period.

Just another pandering pug when it means nothing.

Of course the best option is to kill the NFA and slash the AFT’s budget.
Doesn’t the house control the budget? Shut it down by giving them $0.00.

It’s a baby step in the right direction but still has no chance. Of course the best option is to kill the NFA and slash the AFT’s budget.

It's more like standing in one spot and jittering in place.
