For some unkown reason..... I have a hankering to try out an "automatic" pocket knife. I'm looking at my usual online spots..... and they can't ship across state lines for xxx reasons which includes me. Is there a local spot within the WS/GB/HP area I can check them out, or is this something I need to visit Thrillhill for? I hate to drive 2 hours..... but there will be a weekend in which I have nuttin' else better to do.

The KNife Room in GSO (right off of 85) - they sell Benchmade and others there
Picked up an auto from them last Christmas for my father

If I'm not mistaken, Mark Wagner (The Gunsmith Shop between WS and HP) had a counter display of Benchmade last time I was there. You might want to call and check, 869-6113.

Have to get one of these, you can't have them in NY.:) In fact no pocket knives at all, they see the clip on your pocket and will search you.
If they can flick it open, you get arrested for having a switchblade.

You know, that makes me want to buy one of the switchblade combs that some kids used to have and add a clip to it, then strut around Manhattan like a boss.

Their laws are silly, but itā€™s this kinda stuff thatā€™s offensive to me
ā€œIn 2010, the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., charged 14 retailers, including Home Depot, with selling illegal switchblade and gravity knives, and agreed not to prosecute them if they stopped selling the knives, handed over profits from past knife sales and financed a $900,000 public-education campaign.ā€ Also ā€œMr. Vanceā€™s office even granted an exception to Paragon Sports, a high-end sporting goods store that sells custom knives, because expensive knives supposedly arenā€™t being used in crimes.ā€

For those that donā€™t follow the link, a switchblade or gravity knife is defined in NY law as any knife that can be opened b a flick of the wrist. Most modern pocket knives can be opened this way given a strong enough flick.

They're highly overrated, The buttons are small and hard to engage when speed is required and yet they always seem to open inside your pocket all on their own.

Then there is the legal issues, not illegal to own but illegal to carry concealed.

...and yet you can carry a fixed blade knife (<4") concealed there but not here. Stupid government tricks.

Can't ship across state lines? Never heard of that. I've seen no online stores that sell autos that won't ship across state lines. Maybe they won't ship to yankee and lib parts.

Unless i misread sumtin......its pretty much all of them.

NYPD PO in subway has problem with a folding knife.

Sounds like youre doing it wrong.

I carry an auto at least once a week, if not more, for the past few years.
My father carries one every day for about 15 years + (that I KNOW of)

Neither have had an issue with our BMs opening in pocket.
Yes, the button isnt huge, but its not like it's hard to find/use.

I'm trying to figure this out...... I'm looking at Kershaw knives (I love my Leek and my Piston). So..... I can buy an assisted opening knife with a device they call a "flipper" and it's perfectly OK, but I can't buy an "automatic" knife that uses a button instead of flipper that appears to perform the exact same action.... This doesn't make any sense. I'm also getting turned off on the "automatic" knives because now I just don't see the big deal. I'm probably still going to satisfy my itch.... but I don't see any practical difference between the "Automatic" knives and the "Assisted" opening knives.

The above video... reminds me of going to the courthouse for the first time..... a pocket knife prohibited. I really never thought of it as a weapon.... I pretty much open packages, break down boxes for recycling and slice my apples with my pocket knife. My Leek...... I'd be scared to try to stab someone with it. I'd probably slice up my hand more than anything.

You seem to be underestimating what you could do with a knife... If you were willing to get sticky.

OP. As for automatic knives,

I personally love automatic knives and recommend you try a couple out.

I carry a ZT flipper and have to say that it's as fast and easy to open as any automatic. Automatic or flipper, it's hard to under estimate the utility of a fast opening one handed knife.

If you are shying away from autos but want something that deploys quick look into the blades with the Emerson Wave feature. I carry a Spyderco Delica 4 with the wave and love it. There are no springs or assists in the process, so no question about silly legal issues. But I can have it deployed as soon as it leaves my pocket. It opens as it comes out of the pocket because the wave catches the pocket and opens the blade.

Ever place I've looked at automatics has said they were for LE & Military only. Is there a way around that?

Yes - money. hahaha

Bought several, not leo or mil.
Bought other things that were supposed to be 'mil/leo only'...you put that CC number in and all of the sudden that stipulation disappears.

Drove past there today. Big Benchmade banner on front of the shop. Not sure whether he stocks automatics.

Funny I come across this thread today as I, like the OP, also have been thinking about picking up an ā€œautoā€ knife for around the house work and such. I am aware thrillhillā€™s store close to Edā€™s Gun shop, but Iā€™ve never been there and itā€™s a hike for me. It looks like ordering online from an out of state dealer is a no-no, and the closest local to Clt dealer Iā€™ve found is Hyattā€™s, which will only sell to LEO/mil.

Anyone know of a dealer based in NC that would ship within NC or of a dealer in autos close to the Clt area?

dave Anderson , he is not in nc but he will ship. that is where jeppo got his from.
Don't blame Jeppo. He's too cheap to own a real knife. :(
