Ok guys. I'm looking for a small stove that I can take camping but will also work in a SHTF scenario.

I like the jetboil but it seems bulky. There's also the alcohol stove, the little fuel tab stove, and the little stove that just screws on to the different gas canisters. And many more...

What do you have and why? Thanks!

I use two stoves and recommend both. First is the gold standard IMHO for versatility. The MSR Whisperlite Intl.

Next is one I’ve really liked that can use propane with an adapter. It’s tiny and super light.

Got two esbit stoves, the ones that use the little fuel tablets
I got both at gun shows for 8 and 10 each, extra fuel tabs are cheap too

I used it camping last year and really liked it.
Very small, tabs heat up water quick for making coffee etc
Leaves almost zero mess

And I hear that you could always burn other things on it, should you need to, like twigs/leaves. Not a huge amount of space, but its there.

Oh, one more thing - the metal box/stove cools down REALLY quickly after use. I was very surprised at how cool to the touch it was after the fuel tab had finished up.

Etekcity Ultralight Portable Mini Outdoor Backpacking Camping Stoves with Piezo Ignition (Orange, 2 Pack) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZA39W6U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_-PsuAbQ78CA6D

I have one of these and a gas cylinder in each bag I own. Also have a couple of esbit stoves that take the fuel cubes. The gas stove always rides in my stainless Stanley pot that i keep in each bag

For backpack camping I like the EmberLite line. You can go ultralight weight pack flat compact size that uses tablets or if you have to twigs.

Also learn how to dig and use a Dakota fire hole pit setup. No need for carrying anything and very little smoke.

Jetboil is my go to and favorite, but you have to have fuel canisters and it sucks in the cold.

Esbit and fuel tab stoves are OK, but cooking anything but a cup of water would be a PITA. Not a fan of these, but keep them on hand for whatever reason... The tabs do work great for getting a fire started, so I guess I'
I'd have to give them a "pro" column check for that.

Solo stove uses wood, and nests in its pot, and it's what I keep in my get home bag in the truck. I also keep a alcohol stove and heet in their too. Alcohol stoves are slow as molasses, but work, and are very small and light to keep handy.

Primus Omnifuel Ti (1st choice) or MSI Whisperlite (2nd choice) are probably the best options for fuel based solutions for both camping and SHTF options.

For true SHTF stove a multifuel camp stove would be what I would recommend but definitely not for the hiking type camping.

The Svea an ultra-classic lightweight gasoline stove in solid brass. Widely used by climbers all over the world, this stove is renowned for its performance at high altitudes. As with the Hunter, it has a self-pressurized burner. The lid of the stove also serves as a small cooking pot.

Features:

- One-Piece Design
- Minikey Control Lever: delivers exact flame control
- Twister Cleaning Needle: allows you to clear the burner jet while cooking
- Power Simmering
- Self-Pressurized Burner
- Integrated Tank
- Fuel: White Gasoline/ Petrol
- Weight: 19 oz.
- Measurements: 100 x 130mm
- Rating: approximately 1400 watts/4700 BTU/h (with optional midipump, approximately - 1600 watts/5300 BTU)
- Burning time: Up to 75 minutes at high output on one filling (4 fl. oz.)
- Boiling time 1 Liter of water: Down to 7 minutes (with optional midipump, down to 6 minutes)

The Svea 123 and Optimus 8R were the gold standard for years and years. I never owned either one but a lot of my backpacking buds did. Gerry donut stove was speed champ for setup and boiling a cup of water and thats what i had and still have...somewhere in my attic.Assembled.jpg

Ive been all over with the MSR Whisperlite. Never had an issue.

And nice thing is it runs in the cold. As in -20f cold. I prime to copper gas tube with fire paste and/or run a little cup of gas to prime it (as it’s designed to do) and once all heated up, turn on the gas and blue flame.

Here mine is cooking eggs [emoji505] at -20. Even with the eggs buried 2 feet in the snow they still froze solid. Peeled them like a hard boiled egg.. they melted in the pan then fried like normal.

I'd never heard of them until your post. Just ordered two. If they suck I'm not out much.

But I'll still blame you.......

+1 Solo stove

Works well and it's almost impossible to run out of fuel!

I wouldn’t expect anything less

I have the whisperlite int'l and really like it. However, next stove will be one of the small wood burners. You'll be surrounded by fuel and not limited by a lowered fuel source.

For backpacking, I love the small form factor, ease of use, and flexibility of the Firebox Nano. Only $40 and folds down smaller than a checkbook.

I've used mine a few times and after using it on an overnighter with a friend, he immediately wanted one as well. I just feed it small sticks to heat water and it works great.

You want a true SHTF stove where you might be weeks/months/years without manufactured fuel sources?

https://www.solostove.com/backpacking-stoves

They run off of twigs and other flammable sources found on the ground. I have two on them (the light and Titan) and have used both in the backcountry. Yes, during normal times you’ll be outdone by Jet Boil’s and other fueled devices. But when the fuel runs dry, you’ll be the last one laughing.

Thanks for all the input guys! Some of these I have never heard of before. Lol I found a tiny titanium alcohol stove I bought several years ago that I never used last night.... I played with it some and it works good. I think I'm going to mess with it some more sense I already have it. Will probably see about one of the small wood stoves also.

Again thanks for all the help. I will keep yal posted :)

Received the EtekCity 2 pack linked above today.

At first I was like wow this is tiny and why did they only send one?

IMG_20180108_133705.jpg

Then I realized the two pack was inside that ^ box..... Holy crap....

Nice plastic casing. Easy deployment. Seems solidly built. Piezoelectric ignitor works. I'll play with them more in the coming days and post a review. Overall I'm impressed especially for what I paid....

I have a MSR Pocket Rocket clone and a old Coleman 442. One uses the canisters and is nice and light. The other uses camping fuel and works in any temp. I've also made lots of can stoves that work well like the cat stove

Amazon has the Ohuhu for $19. Wood stove. No experience with it. Great reviews. Better than 3 rocks i guess. Needs a 1 cup or 2 cup pot to go with like the Svea.

OK guys -I know this ain't nothing fancy -but it works. Being a plumber, I took an old thermal expansion tank and made it into this little stove. Grill came off a disposable grill from Big Lots I got for a buck. So while it doesn't look like much, it works well and was about as cheap as it gets.:)20180108_160602 (2).jpg 20180108_160548 (2).jpg
Got a larger one for base camp made from an old pump tank.

I like the Solo as I have the Lite, Titan and Campfire. 5 different Coleman Stoves and a old M1950 Military that has never been used. I like stoves. May be a few others that I have forgot about. LOL

I also have the whisperlite has always came through for me.
I have a couple of snow peak backpack lanterns that are also as well. They were a little pricy but two is one and one is none.
So therefore I have two.

I have looked at the Etekcity stoves for normal backpacking. As cool as the Solo Stove is, when you're hiking for fun (i.e. not SHTF), it can be frustrating to have to "work" for your food after busting ass all day on the trail! That said, it still works and I don't have to carry any fuel. I've even burned damp stuff in the Solo Stove. Once you get a fire going, it's so efficient that it'll dry out and cook even damp stuff.

I'm trying to get into some backpacking this year. I put the combo package that has this stove, the campware set and a fuel canister in my cart on Amazon.

Looks pretty neat

I use this little pot from Stanley. Have a couple of these. They’ve been awesome so far. I’ve cooked oatmeal, eggs, instant grits, used it to heat water for coffee. Love them

You can tell who has some money sunk into camping in this thread.
