I’m going to paint a DIY silencer this weekend and am using Rustoleum High Heat (2000°) primer. The curing process says bake at 250° for 30min, let cool for 30min, bake at 400° for 30, cool for 30 and then bake at 600° for 30.

I’m not concerned about getting those exact temps, so I was going to use my gas grill on low/med/high. I have a barrel with the proper threads on it that I was going to use as my “holder” while painting, and wondered if I could also use it while baking...instead of coming up with something to use to hang the silencer inside the grill.

The reality is I may never use the barrel again (it’s a 16” AR57 barrel), but am I going to do any damage to it by heating it to those temps? Especially if only part of the barrel is going to be inside the grill?

...would a safer idea be to just do the first two steps and not worry about the highest heat? I can always retouch the paint if it bothers me, but it’ll also be tucked inside the rail of its dedicated host, so I’m not expecting much damage from handling.

Nope, its fine, the barrel. But you need a hell of a heat glove or a way to transport the barrel "can on a stick" back and forth.

Or do it at the range. Attach the can to the gun, paint, shoot, paint, shoot, paint shoot it again. All within 1 1/2 hours. LOL

That would cost me more in ammo than the material and stamp...to keep it at a consistent temp for 30 minutes (x3)!! :D

But it sure would be fun.

I have pot holders, and a small 1800° welding blanket that I use for silencer removal when necessary.

I got 3’ steel rods a few hundredths under the inside barrel dimensions for 22, 223, 30, 45, 6.5, 9mm to use to check that cans are are concentric and clear of the bore. They were maybe $7 each from Grainger or some place like that. Very cheap insurance. You should have ones for your hosts anyway, and it should work fine for the painting job.

Six Hunnit degrees shouldn't hurt the barrel. Just to be on the safe side, I might use a little anti-seize on the threads. If...… you have one of the laser thermometer guns, getting your temperature right will be easy.
