The wife and myself have been up here a couple of times already this year and there is plenty to do but these mountains are so pretty I want to shoot in them. Is there any pay/free places to recreational shoot within a reasonable distance(that are SAFE from stupid people with no firearms handling skill)? For those of you who know me from IDPA this is not for me, I'm looking for some place to take wife to shoot some 22lr pistol and rifle. A place that will let you draw from the holster would be nice. Thanks in advance!!!!!

Im not real familiar with the area and the only range I know in the area is the Watauga Gun Club. I know someone who shoots at a monthly match and really speaks highly of the club. Don’t know their rules for range use, so you will need to do more research. Here is their website.

I have been going up to the highlands (Boone/Blowing Rock/Banner Elk/Etc) my whole life, even lived in Boone for 3 years. There is one gun store that I know of up there, Cornbread Tactical. I've asked numerous times about shooting, the Watauga Gun Club and the one at Chetola are the only ones I've heard about. The Chetola one is ridiculously expensive... there was a reason I didn't shoot at Watauga, but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

As far a Cornbread Tactical, the owner lost my business when he stated he believed ARs needed to be stricter regulations. Of course since he served and worked as a LEO for a while he'd of course have no trouble with that. When I pushed him on the logical flaws in his opinion he told me multiple stories of officers having NDs, and a chief of police who'd left his service pistol in public bathrooms (more than once) and had an ND in his station... The owner then doubled down on ARs needing more regulations.

Needless to say, that was the last time I went there.

He's in the wrong business for those opinions. Glad I've never stopped there.

I was a LEO for 31 years and never shared those opinions. But there again I don’t go around blaming material objects for the events that people cause.

I’m up there almost every week. There are no public shooting ranges in the area. Closest one is across the border in Hampton Tennessee. There is another gun shop over in Linville at the Chuck Poore’s tractor sales.
