I have never bear hunted and have no idea what to do. I have pictures of bear on my mountain property and I have the bear stamp and would like to get one.

Is it best to hunt bear early morning, mid-day, or late evening?
Is it best to hunt in creek bottoms or higher up on the mountain?
After harvesting one, do you field dress it like you would a deer?
Is skinning one similar to skinning a deer?
I process my own deer, is a bear processed the same way?
What is the best way to prepare deer meat?
Anyone have a good source to have a bear hide tanned?

I'm just trying to get as much information ahead of time, in case I'm lucky enough to get a bear.

Thanks

Always wanted to try bear hunting. Haven't had an opportunity yet, so I'm interested in the responses as well.

Haven't hunted them in NC.
My experience was they're most active dawn and dusk, but if there's a food source they may show up anytime.
Find a trail they use, hunt that.
They field dress the same.
Skinning depends a bit on what your plans are for the hide, but cut, pull, scrape still applies. The toes, noses, and ears take a very skillfull hand, many leave that for the taxidermist.
We always treated it like any other red game meat. I like it as pulled bbq and sausages, not a fan of it for roasts and whatnot.

Whatcha plan on shooting it with?

I am about 750 yards from a bear right this minute. I have seen it on a game camera several times. He and I have a contract..I ain't going to his house and he ain't comin ta mine.

.22 CB shorts, I keed, I keed!

Not sure yet. My stand is about 80 yards from where I got it on camera. My deer gun is 6.8, but I could do .308, .30-06, .270 or .35 Rem. Unless I'm just out and about without a rifle and only a pistol, then it might be .40, .357 or .44 Mag.

I also got a couple of faint pics of a very wide buck with 11 or 12 points. He never would come in front of the camera and stayed on the opposite side of the creek. I moved one camera to the other side of the creek and I think I might ride up there today or tomorrow to check on the cameras.
