The Belton Gun Club located in Anderson County, SC holds a cowboy action shooting match on the second Saturday of each month. They sometimes hold an "extra" match in months that have five Sundays. They usually offer something different in the 5th Saturday matches like Wild Bunch, Josey Wales or Belton's very own "Road to Perdition". I am not a member of that club but I regularly shoot the monthly match with the "Belton Bushwhackers".

The folks in Belton like to include props and other elements that make the game a lot of fun. New shooters and spectators are made welcome and I know several shooters who got started there.

There is some information on the Belton Gun Club website but there is also a separate site for the cowboy group that has the latest announcements as well as photos and other good stuff:

I post videos from cowboy action matches on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRzQlsAiZC9b2nvSqlKUyNg

If you have never seen a cowboy action match, this is a good club to visit.

I think I'm going to head that way for the first time next weekend. They have a PCC match on Sunday.

Just got the email that the Bushwhackers' July match will be held in the evening rather than the morning. Registration opens at 6:00 pm and the match begins at 7:00 pm.

I took one video at the "night shoot", of a black powder shooter. Even though there were floodlights illuminating the targets (the sound you hear on the video is a portable generator), it was a challenge to do tasks like loading the shotgun. Good practice.

The Bushwhackers' monthly match is this Saturday. It will be a morning match but start time has been rolled back a little so that we will get a little more of the cooler morning temperature.

Good match on Saturday. I was hot on the heels of the top shooter in my category which means he beat me, as usual. One day I'll beat him. If he trips. Maybe twice, for good measure. And drops a gun.

The Belton cowboy match is tomorrow; it will be a little chilly but we should have blue skies and sunshine.

If you are in the area come check it out.

The December match was called off due to wet range conditions but the January match is coming up this Saturday [and there was much rejoicing].

Hoping for decent weather for the match on Saturday. They are offering an optional derringer/pocket pistol “side match” before the actual match begins.

We will be back in Belton on Saturday April 14. We’ve had new shooters at almost every match but there’s room for more.

I haven't posted any report on Belton matches in the last couple of months but the new Match Director Slippery Stew is doing a fine job. They always provide ice cold water and Gatorade which is very welcome in the warm weather.

Here is a video that my friend Old Man Winter posted from the June match.

I haven’t updated this thread in a while but the Belton Bushwhackers’ monthly match is this Saturday. The Match Director is letting his assistants run this month’s match so there might be some “when the cat’s away” shenanigans.

The Belton club built some new shooting bays that are very nice and closer to the club entrance.

Last month we had two “prospective” new shooters who came out to watch and ended up shooting a stage with gear lent by the other shooters. I enjoy helping new folks and there’s always room for more.

Back in the 1900s. Like the mid 80s we had a lot of success putting on monthly Combat Matches [IPSC]. These were well attended with usually 50 or more spectators and shooters. These were usually 3 stage matches. When the "combat" was over we always finished up with a "Cowboy" stage. It was amazing to see the difference in the way people shot the Western stages as opposed to the Combat. Everybody to a man had a smile on from ear to ear. There is a reason these things took off like they did, grown folks playing Cowboys and Indians is Always great Fun. If you've never been, I promise you will come away with a smile.

Thanks, Billy. Cowboy Action Shooting originated in California in the 1980s when a group of action pistol shooters thought it might be fun to use cowboy guns. Just about everyone at that time had grown up watching Western series on TV and Western movies in theaters.

My Pal Billy Rivers from Chesterfield had me get him the outfit used by SASS member #3. A pair of Mundon Colts and leather gear by Milt Sparks and the original Gold #3 badge. He is very happy and proud of it. I was glad to get it for him.

I just got word that the April match has been cancelled.

Next match is Saturday September 14.

The South Carolina State Match is coming up on September 26-29. The monthly matches in the weeks before a “big” match are often well attended as folks try to get a little extra practice in. If the weather is fair I expect a good turnout but there’s always room for YOU!

I am late posting this but the Belton Bushwhackers are not shooting tomorrow as the club is hosting a benefit match for wounded and recovering LEOs.

They will be back the second Saturday of December.
