Beretta 92A1 guide rod question

I have a newer 92A1 that came with a captured guide rod/recoil spring.

Can i put in a non-captured recoil spring/guide rod? Or are the newer ones designed only to take the captured type?

Yes, I ran the guide rod and barrel of my 96A1 in my 92 Brigadier. Worked like a dream
