Looking to buy a new tundra. Found one at cox in Burlington and the price they gave me is pretty good. Just wondering if anyone here worked at a Toyota dealership or something like that and could get me a super good deal

Ralph Hayes of Anderson, SC. I bought my last Tundra (TRD Pro) from them over the phone and they delivered it. Beat everyone in the area by $11k.

I would check with Mid-State in Asheboro. I bought a new Tacoma from them a few years ago and they had better inventory than anyone around here and were the only dealer that was not adding expensive dealer-installed options like the window tint (Cox does) or the $900 pinstripe that the Durham dealer does.

If you can make it to Hickory, Mike Johnson’s Toyota is awesome. Jeff Robinson is who I dealt with and he did very well by us. He went out of his way to set us up with exactly the car we wanted, no less, no more. But all of Mike Johnson’s Toyota’s have a lifetime powertrain warranty.

Assuming the car biz hasn’t changed since my last purchase, any dealer can get you any car that’s in the area. We have a forum member here that drives all over the state (and occasionally even out of it) on dealer trades. So, just because the truck you want is in Burlington doesn’t exclude another dealer from offering you a better deal on the same truck. Play them against one another and ignore the “If you don’t buy it from us you won’t get the best service” bs.

Truecar.com and then your dealers will give you the bestest prices ... no haggle needed.
This worked on my 13 WRX but for my 16 4Runner and 18 Tacoma what worked best was putting dealer against dealer.

I contacted every dealer in the area, took the best price and offered the 2 best dealers an opportunity to beat it. The 2016 was N CLT, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone, ever!! The 2018 was Mike Johnson’s in Hickory, very good dealer, I’d give them a solid 8/10. However, Mike Johnsons was the 3rd highest out of 11 initial offers, so you have to do your homework first. Cox wouldn’t even play ball FYI.

The out the door quote from Cox is supposedly $7000 off of the MSRP of the truck. The out the door price I got from Modern ( Who I've bought two from in the past) was not as good at only $5000 off MSRP. I'll see what hickory has on their lot and contact them. I signed up for the TrueCar thing and none of those prices were close to the ones I've already got.

If I might make a recommendation to your approach... don’t worry about what’s on their lots. My Tacoma wasn’t available in the entire region. Tell them exactly what you want, get a quote for the same thing from everyone so you know you’re comparing apples to apples. I got a 2018 Tacoma for $6k off msrp, that’s nearly unheard of, especially a month after they’re released!

Yeah I sent them the link to Cox's page for the exact truck I want. I want to make sure it oranges to oranges bc I know the small stuff will be the difference.

.....Mordern Toyota would be last on my list. Right now.....they have to make up for the rebuild cost.
LOL yeah that's for sure.

I've bought, or tried to buy, Toyota trucks in Charlotte, Asheville, Asheboro, and Southern Pines. Mid State Toyota in Asheboro was by far the best to deal with. The place in Southern Pines was by far the worst and I would advise anyone to steer clear of them.

My experience is true car is not the best deal by far just a reasonable price but much better can be had. i had better luck finding a few similar equiped that were what I wanted and emailed dealerships for quote request and never speak to them on the phone or very little. Find lowest numbers and then use those to give dealership you want to work with a chance to match it or beat it and be willing to walk if its not deal you like.

My experience is that the cleanest purchase results in the lowest price. In other words, no trade in ( sell it elsewhere), no dealer financing (cash or financed thru credit union/bank). “I want the cash price, key in hand, now.”

Yes this is also very important. Treat the deal as 3 completely separate transactions. 1) get best price on vehicle, 2) let them make you an offer on your trade, 3) shop for your money. Tell them you have no trade and will finance through whoever gives you the best rate/terms. Don’t let them make any of these conditional upon the other. There’s a reason the dealer has a new car manager, used car manager, and finance manager, they’re all separate deals.

I'm up way too early, with nothing to do, so I'll bore you with a car-buying story.

We were in the market for a Ford Explorer and I had offers from plenty of dealers. The best I was able to find, on the configuration I wanted, was in Winston. We were living down Old Winston Road from Crescent Ford in High Point. Before driving to Winston, I walked Crescent's lot, found the same configuration and sat down with a salesman. We went round and round and round on the price but the guy wouldn't get down to the quote from the Winston dealer. The salesman used every trick in his book to try to make the deal (memorable were, "Since you live near us, you'll want to have the vehicle serviced here and our buyers get better service" and "That's the oldest trick in the book. When you get to Winston, they either won't have that vehicle or the price will actually be higher than mine.").

I'd had enough so I said, "I have plenty of time on my hands so I'm going to take a ride to Winston and see what happens." I asked what time he got off work and he responded 7pm. Then I asked which way he turned, pulling out of the lot, on the way home. He responded, "Right".

"Perfect", I said. "As you roll down Old Winston Road, check the last driveway on the left before the light. If you don't see a white Explorer in the driveway, call me in the morning. "

Guess what happened next. :D

I’ve bought two new Toyota’s this year. 4Runners to be exact. One from Scott Clark and one from Toyota of Apex. My experience with Apex Toyota was 10x better than that of Scott Clark.

Most dealers hate it when you tell them you’re paying cash and you’re not interested in their financing. Toyota of Apex didn’t seem to mind it at all. I knew exactly what I wanted and did all of the negotiations via text message the day before. Once we agreeed on the price I paid a $1k deposit and drove up the next morning and was out the door in maybe 30 mins. It really was that easy!

@hlpressley thats pretty impressive with Apex!

When I shopped for my 16 4Runner, Scott Clark actually challenged me to get the deal from N CLT that I was asking them to beat. As the sales manager requested, I emailed him 2 days later when we got the vehicle for exactly what I requested. Never did hear back from him.

I've been thinking about trading my Jeep Grand Cherokee in for a 4runner. This thread will be useful. Thanks all!

4Runner > Every other SUV and most trucks
I really enjoy my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It also can tow more than the 4Runner and I do tow.

However, I am digging the XP predator package. I've emailed 5 dealers for out the door pricing. On the off-road and SR5 ..lowest out the door price I've seen is 39.7k.

I’m a penny pincher/deal hunter and will say that the XP package, especially those predator steps, are super overpriced.

I bought an 18 SR5 non premium 4wd in April for $35k out the door. My second one was an 18 TRD Offroad also non premium (don’t like leather) and paid $36k out the door. Both of those deals included the clear bra protection, window tint, and all weather mats throughout.

Don’t pay $39.7k!!

According to this guy, Truecar is the most you should pay. Instead of picking a dealer at random and haggling with them, get the dealers to compete with each other. Here's the process. The guy says he beats Truecar every time.

https://mb.clark.com/showthread.php?58544-A-question-about-the-Weenut1-process
Truecar has gotten too big for its own good. 5-6yr ago dealers could afford to give the few Truecar customers an even better deal but they can't do it anymore if everyone is using truecar. And with the amount of advertising they do, everyone uses truecar.

Yeah I'm not looking for the 20 inch wheels. It's the black 17 inch TRD wheels with off-road tires. No Mall crawler here either I'll beat the crap out of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Actually have farm truck plates on it.

Agree with the statements above. We paid ~35-36 otd for the wife's '18 SR5 premium, with dealer installed extras.
