So was just wondering, I have a 100yards to get sighted in. Would it make sense for me to use the lightest round I can since it shoots the flattest? For my 300Win Mag I will shoot anyting from 150gr to 245gr. If I only have 100yards to work with would that not be best?

Zero with whichever you use the most.

Then, for all the others, shoot at 100 and record your +/-. Then, when calculating adjustments at whatever distance, add the +/- adjustment to the solution.

For example, I have a 6.5CM load that shoots .3MIL off my zero. When I calc my 700 yard solution - let's say 5mil - I'll dial in 5.3 mil.

If you're using something like Strelok PRO, you can record this 'zero offset' for every load and have the calculator do the math for you

Let's clarify, I have a cheap rifle and I only get to the range once in a blue moon because it's a drive. I shoot from 150gr to 245gr whichever factory second bullet is available. My powders vary by what is in stock. What is the best solution for a cheapster like me?

Honestly, at 100 yards I doubt it makes much difference at all. You'll see maybe a 1" variance at that distance. If you were to go out to distance, which I assumed you were given 300WinMag, then I'd be more dilligent.

But for 100 yard plinking, just shoot for precision (group size) and don't worry about accuracy (hitting the bull)

I don't think it will matter to much what weight you chose.

I took a pic of my dope card and if you zero at 100 you will be 9" low at 300. There is a point blank zero I think the winmag is close to a 300 yard maximum point blank range.

Check out JBM ballistics calculator. It will help with your decision.

What is the maximum distance you will shoot an animal?

Doesn't matter. The more you shoot a 300 mag the more groups open up until can't tell what happened. They're a lot of shoulder fun still!
