We have very large skunks. These two are mostly white with some black.

We also have a couple that are mostly black with white. We have one that is almost completely white with a black head above the eyes.

After observing these skunks for a year or so, one thing is clear: Raccoons aren’t affected by their nasty skunk spray.

However, Raccoons are very affected by a Skunk’s aggression. I just witnessed a Skunk viciously going after a Coon like there was no tomorrow.

Remember the first rule.. don't talk about fight club!

haha up in northern NJ at my uncles (think Cary type city) I drove around them squished flat like we do possums around here. Only thing different is you can smell them before, during, and after passing.

Please bring me a couple. The damage done by racoons is beyond belief.

Many years ago I attempted to help a skunk remove a babyfood jar stuck on its head, after about 15 minutes or so it managed to crawl under a building, never did get it free. But I managed not to get sprayed either. Good fun for a couple of drunk high school kids.

Ya know, jus' a little east of you, there are no skunks and haven't been for decades. The Deep River from Colfax to Jamestown seems to be devoid of skunks. There are beavers, muskrats, 'coons and 'yotes, but no skunks.

I’ve heard that it you get them as a baby they can make decent pets and will use a litter box. Of course you need to get their sent glands removed, and like ferrets they would still have an odor.

I have thought it would be fun to do, name it kitty, and then watch the reaction of a visitor that didn’t know about your special friend. o_O

Here kitty, kitty.

My sister wanted one when she was 12. I remember it still smelling, ornery, and mad as heck. It wasn't able to be held as it would scratch and bite. So, it was kept in a cage all its life. Sad when I think about it.

Probably one of the reasons I don't like to see animals in cages.

Will be sure to deliver you some of the joy to your area. They use to not be in the SE corner of guilford Co but they seem to have moved in 5-10 yrs ago and have apparently enjoyed the stay. Bad thing is them and fire ants showed up about the same time and I much prefer the skunks if I had to keep one.

You didn't by chance approach me at a gas station a few months ago, to show me pics of those skunks on your phone did you?

Reason I ask, someone did, to show m photos of very big, nearly all white skunks they'd seen on their property, and wanted to know if I knew anything about them.

Growing up in Horry County, I guess I could count on one hand how many times I saw a skunk.

Now up here in NC it seems like just about everyday I drive past skunk roadkill that's stinking up the joint.

When I first moved out here I thought everyone was growing pot.

Nope. Wasn’t me. The one’s that are huge and nearly all white are bizarre looking creatures when you first see them.

Funny story, Wife and I are tent camping near Canada. Its O dark thirty and I'm pretty much lit from drinking all day. I'm sitting in my camp chair reading a book and the Wife has retired into the tent for the night. Along side my leg is a garbage bag with leftover dinner in it. I feel a bump against my leg and think it our dog so I reach down and push her away, she does it again so I push her away again. Next time she does it, I reach down with my hand find her head and start petting it as I'm reading my book. Thru the alcohol soaked brain I then realize that, we don't have the dog with us. I then take the lantern and lower it to see what Im petting and its a skunk with its head in the garbage bag. I continue to pet the Skunk to not alarm it and say to the wife " You have to see this, come on out" She asked why and then tells me " hell no " All is good tho, the Skunk found a piece of hamburger sat under our car and had dinner. I can tell you, they feel like a long haired cat.

ok...my story, although not that funny.

while fall turkey hunting at first light, i hear the pitter-patter of footsteps.
i am set-up good, so i just adjust my posture and wait. no calling.
cannot see anything. just hear whatever it is getting closer.
slip the safety off and then i see what is going on.
a momma skunk and her four babies are coming
home after an all-nighter. they proceed to file
into a hollow log about 8 or 9 feet in front of me.
after kit #4 enters, i retreat as silently as i can.
i only wish i had the opportunity to take
a video, but this was back-in-the-day.

Skunks are generally one of the most laid back critters. At least here in the mountains they are.
They're not looking for a fight. You can pretty much coexist side by side..literally..and they just go on about their skunk business.

I hear they make good pets too, so here is another Skunk story. Met a old country man a while ago, I dont know how the convo started but he told me he had a Skunk as a pet and it made a good guard dog. I had to hear more and me being another old country man, he opened up to me. He tells me he caught a young skunk and had it de scented by removing the stink gland by his local vet. Ok, I'm good with that so I ask about the guard dog duty. He then askes me a question, " What if you were walking up to someone's house or property and a dog walks up and starts barking, then what would do if a skunk runs at you , what would you do ? "
