I'll just go ahead and say the biggest and fastest you can get.

Or at least a caliber that you can carry 15 to 19 or more rounds.

I'm bettin' that the bear had less problem with you than it did your dog.
Dog was barking right?
Dogs and bears are natural enemies since the beginning of time. Both of them were just doing what they're supposed to do, and got no problem getting you involved in it. :D

The majority of bear guns made for the purpose are small size magnum-rated or big bullet revolvers, and the calibers all start with a 4 or 5. Portability with punch. If you wanted to go semi, that's not a Desert Eagle type, best bet would probably be 10mm.
'Bear Guns' are not cheap, and they're not plinkers. They're loud as a rocket, kick like hell and the ammo is expensive too. I have several that qualify and none of them get shot on the regular.
Most of my trekking is done on the atv. If I think I'm going to be more likely to run across bears that day, along with my sidearm, I take my 18.5" pump action 30.06.

If it has rabies or a death wish. is what I worry about. They usually run off when they hear me but he didn't last night I carry a 10mm around the house at night

10mm would be plenty. Bear spray would be easier. FWIW, not many bears stick around when dogs start barking at them. Probably just woke up and grumpy. Where about in Hickory? Had reports of some near where I hunt but have not seen any on the property.

Make sure the dog is not a wimp that runs back to you for protection at first contact. You might wind up with a bear in your lap very quickly.

The dog is a big sissy he likes to go after stuff with wheels or rabbits and deer. We heard the bear making some weird sounds and when he got within 30 yards teddy (the dog) took off towards the porch and the bear started standing up and pounded the ground as I started backing away with gun drawn he folowed me I'm more worried about rabies I know it's rare but there still a chance I had the light on the bears face but couldn't really tell so I didn't try to put him down . Also if anyone knows where I can find a long haired German Shepard puppy let me know

Im about 3 miles south of Wilkes county line off hwy16 at the base of the brushy mountains . I have bear spray but if it does have rabies it don't work from my personal experience I've never had one do what the one did last night. They have always runned away when I've come up on em

My normal woods carry gun is an old Charter Arms 3" Bulldog in .44 SPL. First two are shotshells followed by 3 hardcast 240 gr LSWC. All under doses of Unique powder. Charter Arms came out last year in said gun in .41 Mag and .45 Colt. (Mag Pug/Pug) A full mag dump of 9x19 or .45 ACP will also work. The black bears on the coast don't hibernate.

I've seen guys just shoot a 9mm round into the ground in front if the bear. They'll high tail it out if there.
