Black Walnut mantle log

The growth rings show that it was a fast growing log - lots of nutrition. The wide sapwood band is another indicator of fast growth.

Nice centered pith though. It ought to make a great mantle with some additional 4/4 lumber as well.

Good looking log.

My dad came into some rough cut black walnut felled in Robeson county by my great grandfather about 110 year ago. He had furniture made from it, and I've made a few pieces from it.

That's a purty log.

My family homestead growing up had two large BW trees- lil sis bought the house from Dad and eventually had them cut down- I got some nice dark pieces that one day I'll do something with...

Gonna mill it wet then let it air cure under a carport. Drying in log form is a 2 year process. Ain't nobody got time for that. ;)

Plus milling is a lot easier wet than dry. Or so I was told by the guy that milled mine. I was later told I still should have painted the ends of the boards. Live and learn.

I found an awesome walnut bench for my firepitmat a place up in the mountains. It was for sale for about $2k!

So now I have some stumps cut from a fallen pine tree.

Take good cars of that walnut. It is pretty stuff.

WOW!!!! I am sure you will be a great caretaker of such a wonderful heirloom for someone. That tree will bring happiness forever.

Sealing the ends makes the wood dry more evenly. At least that's what YouTube tells me.

Thatā€™s correct. Wood cells are designed to convey nutrients vertically in the tree, so a log will lose moisture more quickly from the ends than the sides. When the ends dry and shrink faster than the rest of the lot, cracks result and you end up wasting a lot of lumber. End sealer products are available that retard this drying process. The most commonly used commercial product is called ā€œAnchor Sealā€ and is made by US Coatings.

Lots of home solutions - watered down glue, latex paint, etc. The advantage of Anchorseal is that it wonā€™t damage the millwork equipment, and is designed to evaporate off of the lumber during the sterilization phase of the kiln drying process.

Here is a tidbit that most dont know.... End sealers are only effective is applied within 3 days of the log being felled / bucked to length. After that the checks have already started and the only way that end sealer would be effective is if you trim 1ā€ or so off of the end of the log so that you have a fresh surface to apply it to.
