Anyone in CFF build (not assemble) there own firearms?
I've always thought there should be a clearer distinction between the two.

    You assemble AR-15’s
    You build 1911’s

And there’s all manner of gray in between. And even “building” a 1911 I speak of doesn’t necessarily mean starting with bar stock.

That's what I'm referring to. Starting from nothing. An idea, and material, then making it.

Even the guys building $8,000 custom 1911’s are usually starting from a base gun.

And they need to be put away someplace where they can be monitored by psychological professionals.

So its rare to start from nothing and build a one off. Its just a very unique right the laws allow. I'd think more people would take the opportunity. I like doing it and just wondered if there were people in this area that also do. I've only been in NC for about 6 years.

Sounds like an introduction is in order. Tell us what you build.

Since I do not machine or cast any part, only buy, then I "assemble".

My dad. The pics became the rifle I'm holding in the last picture (on the right).

I just like playing around with making stuff. Worked in motorsports racing for awhile then making surgical implants while I was in Michigan. I still love the motorsports but got into rifles as a hobby.

That titanium and carbon fiber project ended up being a mix of built and assembly. I didn't make my own barrel, trigger, or grip. Its kinda like a tubb gun but with my changes.

Haha just wrong tool for the job. The titanium was very unkind to that slitting saw. Had to use what was in the shop.

Titanium in my mind is the result of a brief foray into metallurgy by Satan himself.

I envy those with the skills to create. I can build beautiful guitars from raw lumber, but metal working is voodoo to me & building a gun is just some next level stuff, IMO.

Also just so you understand when a custom part seems like an absurd amount of money, that 1 piece of 3 1/2 inch diameter of Ti costs about $1200-$1400 per foot before it even starts getting worked. Screenshot_2020-07-28-21-43-40-1.png

Yep. Makes for really expensive scrap if you bork it up too, for those who didn't know. I remember my first encounter with it many years ago, my buddies in the shop gave me a short Titanium bar and a blueprint, and laughed their butts off when I told them I'd never worked with it but it couldn't be too difficult.

It's crazy difficult to work with....

Drill and reaming gas port to size, and then spot facing barrel for brass tipped gas-block set screws. The set screws never need any threadlocker and they stay tight using this method.

That is mighty fine! I've never machined titanium, but am planning to do so this year for some Form 1 suppressors. Quite frankly, I'm a little anxious about it. I did pick up some Moly D as a coolant though.

An amazing build. I have built an AR and a 1911, but nothing like that.
