One of the worst things about the shortage to me is no longer having the ability to buy a weapon in a caliber I don't already own ammo for. It never used to even be a consideration, now it's pretty much a deal breaker. Makes browsing the BST a little less exciting. 😞

Try having a taste for the offbeat calibers. Only way I can afford to shoot .41Mag is to roll my own. .357Max & .41 Special? Fuggedaboutit without reloading. Last 2 revolvers I've bought have been in "reloader only" chamberings.

I know, not much help. Just glad that I am very well stocked on components, so the shortages don't really even register on my personal radar.

Too bad stuff like this doesn't equate to lower prices on guns you can get ammo for.

I was just talking about your .41s & .357 Max the other day, my wife was asked if I like revolvers and she wasn’t sure, but she definitely remembered me having a blast shooting yours!

I've been there before. Took an interest in 32 Winchester Special. Found a nice old 1920's Winchester 94. Ammo for it was rare, so I had to have bullets cast for me.

It was a nice shooter, but the ammo is what killed it for me. Ended up putting it up for consignment at a shop, waited for a year, and got less than I'd hoped for it.

Nowdays I'll stick with more common calibers.

Brass and bullets seem to be pretty much available, and if you can't find them for sale, I'd bet some of the fine members of this and other forums can help you find enough of what you need to get you going until this present dearth of components blows over. I know I had to ask for some .30 Carbine brass and have had pleasant responses... now looking for the opportunity to pay it forward.

I hear ya - I just started with 308 so now I am grabbing my ankles while looking for ammo.

.41s are funny in that regard. Sometimes they bring less due to they're being offbeat/unusual & sometimes they bring $$$ due to scarcity or limited production. All my .41Mags are low volume distributor exclusives & are going for a good bit more now than I paid back when they were current.

.41 Specials are always gonna be steep, as they are always a custom proposition & the .357Max has been discontinued since the early '80's & less than 11000 are known to exist. No breaks for me with my tastes.

I would definitely not want to be in the market right now or need to buy guns or ammo. I started laying stuff back during O's reign & put the pedal to the floor after Sandy Hook.

I actually decided to cut back before now ! And I turned down a Glock 30 like I've been looking for because of the ammo shortage. It's all revolvers for now .38/.357 and .44 special and magnum for handguns. Also cut back to just .308 and 5.56 and 12ga. , had a .270 and should have keep a 30.06 but again trying to consolidate! And Crazy Carl I owned a .41 mag for a bit too! A 8 3/4" S&W blued 80 something model. If I do something odd now it's going to be BIG! Like maybe a .475 Linebaugh which will also shot Ruger .480 and I lust after a .454 Casull Freedom Arms, 4" barrel please!

I was brainstorming with a custom rifle builder about converting a marlin 336 to 357max. Its a long term project that might come to fruition. 😉

I've been temped to spend money on a compound bow and learn to use it. Ammo is going to hard to find for a long time, and then it will not be cheap.
You can find LOTS of craigslist deals for complete bow/arrow sets. They're not banned like firearms are.

I did that back in CA, went to an archery shop and got fit for a bow, took a few lessons and then started doing 3D field archery. Oddly there was a fantastic field archery range (in the Bay Area) with a lot of matches. Fun times, and honestly it's way more satisfying making shots with a bow than it is with a pistol or rifle. More zen.

As to the OP, reloading makes the difference. I don't have ammo in a bunch of calibers, but I do have random components to make stuff. If I see something in a weird caliber, it's going to use powder and primers that are easy to stockpile (not now, but normally) and finding brass for oddballs isn't too hard even in a panic. Noobs are trying to find 9mm, they're not looking for once fired 357sig brass.... usually. :)
