Very excited to announce that Run and Gun is sweeping the nation...and coming to South Carolina!! We will be running and gunning over at the lovely Clinton House Plantation in Clinton, SC on August 4th, 2018.

What is a run and gun you ask... essentially, a centerfire biathlon. Entrants carry a pistol and rifle of almost any centerfire caliber, ammo, and supplies over a course with obstacles, and shooting stages along the way. They are not allowed assistance from anyone while on course. It's taxing, challenging...but very rewarding. A great test of your skills and fitness!

Check out our website here - https://www.carolinarunandgun.com/

Also our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/carolinarunandgun

We will be offering three races. Our 3k distance has 3 stages, our 5k distance has 5 stages, and our 8k distance has 7 stages. The match is about halfway sold out right now.

Any questions please ask! Otherwise our website is pretty explanatory. Hope to see you there!!

Interesting...... I'm on the fence about this. If I participate, it will be the 3K course. o_O

On second thought, I have no interest in doing a mud run with shooting stages. Have fun competitors.

I registered for the 3K - if I can get myself in better shape before then, I may try to switch it up to the 5K.

I suspect this is going to be a great match. I shot the 3 Gun at Clinton last week with the Run-n-Gun match director, she's going to do a great job putting this thing on!

Might be fun since I would have no expectations of finishing in the top 50-100.

I am considering signing up for this. Anyone in Raleigh want to train for it?

@NKD, if you run it, I'll get you a beer afterward. I'll even show you how to tie a swiss seat to make the slack line easier.

Fairly low. For the 3K/3Stage version, I'm planning on 3 rifle mags and 5 pistol. That should be ~150% of official round count. Scale up for the 5/8 stage events

Come on ya'll! I signed up for the 8k. Pretty sure I won't be first but betting I won't be last. Time to get up and get moving...the hardest part to starting not finishing.

From the looks of the videos, it looks like cleaning up afterwards might be the biggest challenge..

Personally I am in no condition to run 3k, 5k, or 8k while traversing the obstacles and shooting the stages like what I have seen on the videos on the site. Nor do I currently have the time to get ready for such, with the US Fencing Nationals coming up this July which I am competing in 3 weapon events (Division III, Division II, & Veterans 40-49 Men's Epee). :)

I wish all those competing in the different distance events safety, swift movement, sustained endurance, and accuracy. :):)

One of my old shooting buds moved to Greer, SC and joined that club. He said that the stills and vids look like what you have to do to get to the 1000yd range on a good day. Said it hasnt been dry enuff down there to get his 4WD Toyo truck back to the 1000yd range in 6 months.

Hi all!! Sorry I've been busy lately but to address a few things -

We will release the Course of Fire & round count shortly, but we estimate round counts for 3k are approx 29 pistol, 26 rifle, for 5k are approx 30 pistol and 42 rifle, and for 8k are approx 46 pistol and 58 rifle. I suggest you carry 2-3x the round count.

There will be prizes for top 2 or 3 in each distance (depending on # of entrants) and also a High Lady for each distance. We will have a prize table for competitors to select from, we've already got a few sponsors (listed on our Facebook/website) and are still bringing in more! So you'll get a trophy/award and some prize to take home with you.

JimmyJames yes it's been mucky there. They cut in a new driveway to get to the 1k range. This is the rainy time of year though, it should be dry for August. It'll still be plenty HOT though.

If you have more questions, ask here or email me at carolinarunandgun@gmail.com

I'd highly recommend giving it a shot even if you just have the tiniest bit of interest. It is what you make it - if you want to go for a walk in the woods and encounter some shooting stages, so be it. We have folks that do that, and then those that run 8 minute miles humping 25lbs of gear...and lots in between. It's really a great test of your fitness and shooting under high stress.

    I'm curious about a few things. ...

How does muzzle direction work for an event like this?

How do you carry the rifle/figure out where to point it?

How many people are on the course at a time?

There are many different techniques. Almost everyone will use a sling. Some fully sling it, so they do not touch the rifle at all with their hands when they are running. Some use a sling and balance it with their hands in front of them, etc. Just comes down to what you are comfortable with. I use a TAB Biathlon sling myself. My rifle is carried like a backpack.

When you are running with it slung, it needs to be pointed in a safe direction, so slung up or down. All firearms are carried unloaded. As long as you are not blatantly flagging someone with it unloaded, we are pretty lenient. Once your firearms are loaded, i.e. during a stage, the 180 is in play. Break it or flag someone and it's a DQ.

There will probably be anywhere from 1-20 people on the course at one time, it just depends. We will be releasing each runner at a 7 minute interval most likely, so it just depends on how fast everyone is running and shooting. Whoever gets to the stage first shoots it first. If you get to a stage and someone is shooting/there is a line, you start your 'wait time', which you record with a watch/phone. This then gets recorded by an RO and subtracted off your final time later.

Ok. So you are cold between the shooting and you stop for stages... Makes sense.

My buddy an I dave33 went and tested our gear today. We will be there even if I have to handcuff dave33 to the truck to get him there!
My first note. Single point sling does not seem to be running long distances friendly... - Looking for suggestions for 2 point slings?
A low profile backpack with hydration bladder sounds like a really good idea... just may get in the way of the low crawl...
Oh and the heat did anyone mention it is going to be hot as H311?!?!?! But, I am really looking forward to the finish line! keep training keep running!

    On the administrative side.
Is the run event 2 days (one run day one award ceremony)? Since we are coming from out of town should we plan a two day stay?

Are there any pre-game meetings / ROE instructions ( see most of it is on the site already) just wondering if there is any other required prior to hitting the range?

Yea, we found out how woefully unprepared we really are. Jogging in the neighborhood in shorts and running shoes is not the same as hoofing it in boots, carrying a backpack and a rifle. Going to be quite a test. Really need to figure the sling situation out soon, need that thing secure and comfy.

That is awesome that y'all are going to try this out. Hopefully I can get there ... one day.

Have you looked into the Ferro Concepts Slingster for a 2 point sling?
Lucas's review, FWIW. Think GT likes it too. Not sure about long distance running though. ;)

Thanks a lot for your interest. First - just making sure you guys are registered on practiscore? The match is close to filling up on the 5k & the 8k, so just checking.

You definitely want to carry water. IMO, I like a simple hydro carrier like this (link). It's pretty low profile. Worse case scenario you could always take it off for the crawls. Honestly though I don't plan on making the barbed wire crawls too crazy. You'll have to get low, but not like, turn into a puddle low, LOL.

For slings...many different ways to skin a cat. Personally I like the TAB biathlon slings (link). You carry it like a backpack, it is incredibly comfortable. I usually tighten one strap more than the other so the rifle is diagonal across my back, so it bounces less. It's very easy for me to get off/on and the padded straps are comfortable after many miles.

Here is an idea of what my loadout looks like. I am going to an RNG in Oklahoma in two weeks. I use an AttackPak war belt, tab biathlon sling, the hydro carrier I linked you to (with 3L water), 5.11 pistol mag pouches, plate carrier to mount hydro pack & carry rifle mags. The only thing not shown is a hand towel that I will affix somewhere. It's nice to be able to wipe your hands/face because you will most likely sweat like a pig.

The event is technically one day, Saturday August 4th. We will do a safety brief/meeting in the morning, assign times, and start sending runners off. When we are finished, we will tabulate scores immediately and do awards. I'm sure we will have some hiccups being the first run there - but hope to have everyone out/gone by sunset!!

The RO's will run the race on Friday which alleviates some of the traffic for Saturday (and allows them to work the stages of course).

Hey Kelly...with regard to assigning times, is it just random or will you be assigning those of us who are a bit....fluffy...earlier times so y’all aren’t waiting all day for the slow pokes?

Hi Beseventeen, bo$$hawg and I are definitely registered, signed up and paid through practiscore shortly after the match was announced. Im liking the TAB sling, looks like it would stabilize the rifle pretty well. From the pic above it looks like you have a small backpack on and the rifle tightened against it to keep everything stable, would this be accurate? Are you able to do the low craws with this setup on or do you have to take it off and drag it?

Have you found running shoes to be good in these types of events or do you suggest boots? Really like my Brooks way more than my boots for running. :D

Just so Im clear, there wont be any predetermined start time until the morning of? Another words, no squadding time on practiscore to sign up for?

Thanks for organizing this, Ive shot pistol comps for years, this will be my first go round with running and rifle shooting. Im sure I will have plenty of more questions.

haha! For the most part it will be random. There's a slim chance I'd run the 8k people first (at randomly drawn times), since they will take the longest, but I'm not totally sure on that just yet.

The backpack is my hydration carrier (but yeah, could double as a backpack!) with 3L of water in it. Yes, everything is pretty cinched down. There is a little bit of sway but you get used to it within the first couple of tenths. I take my rifle off for the low crawls (the barrel always wants to poke up and hang on it) but I leave everything else on.

Everyone will be different for footwear, but I really prefer trail running shoes. 1 lb on your feet is like 5 on your back. The lighter you can be there, the better. The Altra shoes I have still have a lot of support, but are super light. Also waterproof which is a nice bonus.

Right, no squadding to sign up for. We will all meet for the safety brief in the parking lot at 0730, and then afterwards will form a line to draw your start time. You can do whatever you want in between drawing your time and your time actually coming up. I've had them all over the place...one time in KY I didn't start til 2pm, so I went back to the hotel to chill for a bit, lol. You will want to be fully ready to go about 15-20 minutes before your time to keep things moving smoothly.

    beseventeen...
a couple of questions... sorry im a newbee to this so forgive me if these are dumb questions...
Can you tell us the size of the plates we will be shooting at for rifle targets? (if not I understand).

Also, my DPMS does not go to safe with "hammer down" so when running with the unloaded weapon between stages what is the protocol? Hammer down or safety engaged? I understand of course the weapon will be unloaded and cleared.
Lastly to make sure I understand fully a safe rifle that is being dumped can be dumped on safe with a round in the chamber or do we have to clear the chamber and remove mags? (for example stage 4 on the 5K)

Thanks... I am getting excited for this event cant wait to give it a whirl!

    No problem at all.

    - All rifle will be 4 MOA targets or greater

    - If possible we like to have safety on but if not that is fine. Most people will be running with closed bolts anyway so that dirt does not get in (plus it tends to snap shut anyway from bouncing around). It gets cleared when you leave a stage and when you come into one, so it's mostly a dead stick in between. So, just mind your muzzle discipline and we will all be good!

    - Correct. Dumping a safe rifle or pistol just means that the safety is on (or, if you just shot the last round, empty weapon with bolt locked back is fine also). You do not need to unload the weapon on the clock nor should you.

We are excited to have you!!

No sir. We didn't camp, stayed in one of the Clinton house rooms.

How did you like the match? Pretty tough I thought. All the hills really took a toll on me as all the land here at the beach is flat. Add in all the freaking slippery/deep mud my run time wasn't spectacular.

Have you seen the overall results yet? I can't seem to find them on practiscore.
