of course, we already know this.
quote:
In post-hurricane San Juan on Monday, commerce picked up ever so slightly. With a little effort, you could get the basics and sometimes more: diapers, medicine, or even a gourmet hamburger smothered in fried onions and Gorgonzola cheese. But almost impossible to find was a place that accepted credit cards.
“Cash only,” said Abraham Lebron, the store manager standing guard at Supermax, a supermarket in San Juan’s Plaza de las Armas. He was in a well-policed area, but admitted feeling like a sitting duck with so many bills on hand. “The system is down, so we can’t process the cards. It’s tough, but one finds a way to make it work.”

I heard on the radio this morning that a mayor in either Puerto Rico or Costa Rica has been rounding up all the supply drops and only giving supplies to those that voted for him. I can’t recall exactly where but it was a bad situation.

My bud down in FLA always says nobody's ever turned a hand full of American green back dollars for anything. Maybe...but if the s#it ever really hits the fan, I don't want your money for anything I have. We can trade for ammo, food, drugs (both kinds), alcohol, guns, fuel, etc. All dollars (or any other currency) will be good for is starting a fire.

agreed.
when the cards quit working,
cash will fill in for a while until
the cash stops working, and then
it's (as i heard it ) the 5 G's:
gold, guns, gin, girls, and guts.

On 9/11 the first thing I did on the way home after getting cut loose from work (along with filling every gas tank I could find) was draw a couple $K out of the bank. We had no idea what, if anything, was going to be hit next. Once the electrons stop flowing, cards and electronic transactions are useless. Those who rely on electronic currency are helpless. Since then I have tried to keep some cash tucked away. It's a decent stopgap until things go back to normal or the 5 G's take over.
