I'm helping train my sister and BIL for their CCW pistol qualification today. Proper grip, sight acquisition etc etc. As soon as things loosen up, they are going to book a class.

It's been so long, I can't remember what the qualification distances are. 3/5/7 yds?

Any tips I can work into the training are welcome.

Also good suggestions for a class near North Raleigh would also be appreciated, my guy retired. (Harnett)

10 shots each at 3/5/7 yds is state requirement.

My course of fire is 40 rounds (30 rounds on target qualifies) and includes some one-handed shooting. Many instructors change it up and DOJ allows as long as minimum requirement is met.

I think you are right on your distances. All I remember is that Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could probably qualify on the shooting portion of the CHP class.

Yeah but your not my sister... I'm joking but she is out of practice for sure and has picked up some bad habits.

I qualified with a .45 and remember apologizing to the instructor for tearing up his backstop. :)

Thanks for the reply.

Thank you very much Mrs Lily. Just one hand, not off hand?

What this young lady said. My instructor was a 50 round guy, kinda heavy on the single weakside stuff to show the benefit of it!

New thing here to do...Blind folded....a great test of "presentation". Several CFF members have shot here while looking away from the target. All got satisfying hits. It's more fun when we use a gun with No sights....Blind folded is next!

To half of the people I see shoot a blindfold would be advantageous....

my class did 10 shots each:

weak hand only 3 yards

strong hand only 5 yards

freestyle 7 yards
I'm glad my class was 2 hands only, since I hadn't shot in 35 years or so!

I didn't get to the one-hand shooting till many months later, in my training at Jim's....and I thought my instructor was out of his mind!

Turned out I could (at the time) shoot better one hand than 2....LOL.

My class, many moons ago I’ll add had ya choot at 7 yards, 5 yards, 3 yards and with target at arms length away. You had to choot the arms distance from your belt line one handed.

The shooting is easy enough, but drill them on safely loading and clearing. The instructors don’t take kindly to being flagged, and I’m pretty sure that they can disqualify for it.

My instructor didn't require any single hand or off hand. I'll concentrate on 3/5/7 and maybe throw in some off hand.

She did good today, she made her older brother proud. We need to work on some confidence and I think she will be good. She asked me today if we could work in a range trip during lunch this week so I think she is hooked on some training.

Despite what is legally required, the course content and shooting practical varies greatly from instructor to instructor. I tried but not too hard to find where you can get the "red book" from the NC Justice Academy but of course the old links are dead and my search was not successful. Why would the state of nc want you to be able to easily get this information? I hope somebody posts the info to get a new redbook. They will amend the laws/rules/and content without notifying the CCW holder.

I bet that class cost you north of $300 didnt it? :p:D
Much more than that.

But, it isn’t each to find classes taught by Stevie Wonder.

Truly mean no offense by it, but if the NC CHP shooting qual is even a concern, it’s good that you have some time to train her before those classes will pick up again. That qual isn’t even the bare minimum to carry safely IMO. I had to discuss this with my mom when she got her first gun.

I did my range test the day before the class, instructor had me fire ten additional rounds as the automatic target was returning to the zero yard mark. Used my Ruger P89 9mm.

My range practical was comprehensive and fun. I was required to draw from concealment. Once I got the instructor straightened out. He was initially insisting that I draw and shoot like Cisko (I s#it you not, see image. The instructor even demonstrated this). I asked for my money back and he said I could shoot how I wanted to as long as I was safe. I told them before I started the course and at least 2 more times I had been shooting IPSC/USPSA for 15 years.

The only issue my G19 ever had was doing something similar at B. Oaks. I guess turning it on its side in order to keep its slide from clouting my side was too much for even Glock perfection.....LOL.....in the G19's defense, the 1911 in .45 hated that move too, and refused to do its thing!

I wholeheartedly agree. I tell all my classes, if you are not going to practice and get additional training, I don't want them carrying a gun.

Don't worry.
My wife did the Qual with a rented .357mag revolver with 38 special loads and the first 30 rounds from the box.
She had never shot a revolver and limited experience with our FNS9 that we had at the time.
My daughter is dead nuts with the FNX45.

We also did 3,5,7 and thankfully the behind your back shot was just the three yard. Twirling the gun around twice and firing with both eyes open was to five yards. I think for the seven yard shot we were from to use long bows.

I agree 110%. Qual isn't really a concern. She could have passed that Saturday. It's been awhile since she shot (we've had some major family drama the past couple years) and she just picked up a G43x and had never shot it. She has wheel guns so a slightly different animal. The qualification was my thing. I wanted her to know what to expect.
We worked on a thumbs forward grip (Not teacup), foot placement, some anticipation, etc. She needs some confidence due to the changes we made to her form. I will definitely push her and her husband toward additional training (that isn't me) and they will be all for it.
Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

A lot of times the CCH course is the only real training people get. It is is sad, but it is the truth. I run them through left, right and both hands. Murphy is alive and well, sometimes "stuff" ain't optimal.
