Hypothetically speaking, what if someone accidentally broke one of these compact florescent bulbs and just swept the pieces up and put it in the trash? Would this person need to start listening for the black helicopters or will the toxins kill ̶m̶e̶ the person before the authorities show up?

Pretty sure Al Gore shows up and you have to give him a foot rub as an apology. With your tongue.

I'm pretty sure picking up the brass this coming Sunday afternoon will settle the score. :D

I worked for Sylvania 30 years ago. Had a $6MM territory in 1989 dollars. I'd pitch our wholesale distributor's defective fluorescent tubes (4' and 8') into the dumpster like empty beer bottles. Smashed to pieces.

You need to call the EPA and have your home designated a superfund site.

Ha. I broke one a year or so ago. Sucked up the pieces with a shop vac. No one came to haul me away. My dog has 3 eyes now though. Coincidence?

I'd rather do hard time than pick up the brass out there.

Very small amount of mercury in these cfl and linear bulbs, it is a catalyst and can be recycled,
when the bulb breaks best to sweep it up and dispose in the trash.

Used bulbs should be recycled at county waste recycling centers as hazmat.
The glass is used in roadways, the mercury is reclaimed.

    https://missouripoisoncenter.org/how-much-mercury-in-a-cfl-bulb/

Going a bit off topic here, mercury amalgamates with gold, often used to reclaim gold
in poor countries, dump mercury on the gold then heat the pc boards and the mercury gets into the air and
then contaminates the ground water supply. Serious birth defects from this.

The EPA doesn't bother you when they're in someone else's dumpster in small pieces. I just heard that rumor somewhere. Hehehe

One year ago I changed 99 of 115 bulbs inside and outside my house to LED. The others I couldn't get the look wanted on those small mini decorative bulbs. I still have two T12 closet light fixtures that need to be changed but they never get any use.

I typically waited until there was a close local county hazard pick up site each year and took the bulbs, TVs, computers, paint, and chemicals.

Hypothetically speaking, the person should go ahead and buy prepaid legal services now before the satellites detect defoliation extending outward from your the person's house.

I remember when you could buy a bulb grinder for linear fluorescent bulbs.

    It's a bunch of BS..

We have to label them as HazWaste and put them into big cardboard tubes for pick up.
The guys come, dump the container in a bin and hand the tube back to us. Still dirty, dusty, and what ever Mercury still stuck in the cracks. It's complete BS.

That's what we have to do when we work at the hospital. Breaking a florescent bulb inside a hospital is a major no-no.

As someone who hypothetically wrapped used oil filters in newspaper before putting them in the trash, and as one who dumped Trichloro-Trifloro-Ethylene and lead chromate down the drain in chemistry class, i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Dont forget about the Carbon Tetrachloride.

I poked a few holes in the oil filters with anail to let them drain before tossing.

What if you spray down your used oil on the dirt driveway and weeds along the fence line.... asking for a friend.

So the attempt to create asphalt was not totally successful - and that sounds fine!

That's old school. Was considering that myself to keep the dust down, but then looked at the nearby well and changed my mind.

Dad told me years ago when he was a teen in school they use to break a thermometer and play with the mercury out of it and watch it act like a ball and roll around in your hand. He still has all his fingers and toes. He is a bit special/stubborn at times but don’t think that can be blamed on the mercury as that trait has came down many generations.

We had a bottle of mercury in our 4th grade classroom, next to it was a cool rock, kind of stringy filiments on it, it had a label underneath, it was a souvenir from out west called asbestos.
