McGill was used to that.

From late 2007 to 2014, Mecklenburg prosecutors dismissed 13 consecutive weapons charges against him, records show.

He was free on Jan. 5, 2015. That was the day McGill shot and killed Robert Miller, a childhood friend.

Also....

Cases like McGill’s have contributed to an alarming statistic: From 2014 through 2018, Mecklenburg prosecutors dismissed 68 percent of weapons charges, a higher rate than any other urban county in North Carolina, a Charlotte Observer investigation found.

But one more gun law will fix ALLLLLLLL of this.

I can remember when Charlotte was a shopping mecca for us. A trip to The Eastland Mall and the ice skating rink.
The Southern Living Show at the Merchandise Mart. THOUSANDS in attendance.

Hmmmmm……...I wonder what happened???? Nobody can come out and say, But we all know.....

They started the concealed carry crap as a gotcha, add on law that was to be the game ender for the gangsters. Instead, as we all knew, it was used to make it harder for the law abiding.

Bet your last dollar if it was one of the "good" folks, no way in hell would the charges be dropped

I’ve said that for years! The first charge to be dropped when they plea is gun charges! If they drop them why in Hell do they want more!?

This came up recently in a N&O story about Durham, where 53% of "felon with gun" charges are dismissed. One legitimate reason the DA gave was that someone is charged with say, armed robbery and felon with gun, and the DA offers to drop the gun charge in exchange for a guilty plea on the robbery. But she was unable to say how many of the dismissals were for that reason.

If I was charged with enforcing gun laws, which do you think I'd prefer:
  • Getting shot at while chasing dangerous criminals through high crime neighborhoods in the cold and rain.
  • Going into a gun shop and auditing his paperwork, making sure some dentist or programmer filled in all the boxes correctly.
I think this is why we, the generally law abiding, suffer when somebody does something bad and the public cries "do something". Plus, the first option, while probably the most effective, would trigger a lot of noise from the race pimps, and most politicians just don't want that kind of trouble.

I would be curious to know what charges they actually pursued. I would be willing to bet that you would see a pattern and that pattern pointed to one of two things.
They either charged people with crimes in instances where they knew they could make money or they did so in instances where they could further a political agenda.

Wonder if it’s to make the city “seem” safer by lowering the statistics numbers on crimes involving firearms? I can almost see the lefty thinking “our criminals will rob you but won’t use a gun”.

That definitely comes into play.

No, it's just a part of the whole plea bargain process that all DA's partake in. A guy has 10 charges. The DA dismisses 9 and the hump pleads out on one. The DA writes that up as a win and in the next election they campaign on a 90% conviction rate.

As bad as it is to say it there is no physical way possible to take every case to trial with the staff they have.

That's not a justification, that is the root of the problem.

Build more jails.... here, take my tax money. Put one in Charlotte and one in Durham to start.

Look we can kill 2 birds with one stone build a prison the entire length of the southern Border then you don't need a border wall and we would have plenty of space for prisoners. we could even put unlocked doors leading to Mexico in each cell so they have a choice of immigrating to Mexico or staying in prison

Dammit, if I don't like that idea!

The other one involving the border was building a canal and rerouting sea freight. Lol.

Isn't there one or two County Prosecutors on here? Maybe they could shed some light on this?

Shed light on what exactly? Jr hits it on the head. See police departments push statistics so they charge every little thing they can. So you get caught with a an ounce of marijuana, 50 baggies, scales, carrying a concealed weapon. What are the charges?

possession Marijuana
PWISD Marijuana
Drug paraphernaila for marijuana
Carry concealed gun

The defense attorney says if you plead to the the Marijuana and paraphernalia charge I'll dismiss the rest. The goal of both the defense and the prosecutor is achieved by getting the most serious charges dropped and not wasting the courts time with going to superior court on a pwisd charge.

There is no doubt that politically manipulating charges and/or statistics come into play, at least with some DAs. The Wake County DA is a clear-cut case of dropping charges for purely political reasons.

There is no doubt that politics come in to play through out an DA office. But most of the plea deals are simply what happens in court to lower the docket numbers and continue to move the cases. Another issue to think about is that you can only be convicted of a certain number of charges on any given court date. I can't remember the number but you will hear a lot about people with 20 charges only being convicted of 4-5 charges. There are a ton of factors that go into the process but most simply come down to who the ada is during court that given day.
