Not in this case. I got the Harbor Freight pole electric chain saw by "Portland" a few year back to do some arborist work. I bid the price of the saw into the job (it was $60 at the time), and the job fell through, and I never got around to taking the saw back. Sat in the box for about 3 years. I have some cedars in the back which shed quite a few limbs and I am having a HELL of a time with this temperamentally "I won't crank until I am good and ready" Stihl gas saw, so I unpacked this little sucker from the box, put the bar and chain on, gave it some bar oil and ..... I am really impressed! First thing I noticed was that it has an Oregon bar and chain (unlike what I would expect from "cheap Chinese crap"). Stupid easy to put together, and well balanced. Now, admittedly it is cedar (very soft wood) but that little booger ate through some 8 inch branches like butter.

It telescopes out to about 10 feet and does a very nice job. Recommended. I am seriously thinking about my selling BMW class chain saw (Stihl), since the blasted thing won't ever crank if it has been sitting more than 4 weeks and just going electric for now.

Are you using non ethanol gas in the Stihl? I can leave my weedeater over the winter with fuel in it and it cranks right up.
Yes. I actually was so paranoid about gas gumming up the carb jets that I bot the premixed fuel from the Stihl store. I am supremely disgusted with this. I just paid $75 to have them "service" it.

The new Stihl products are supposed to start, or you take 'em back. That's why I will not allow my Stihl warranty to lapse. I'll buy their oil and use non-alky gas, and if there is trouble, it goes back to the hardware store where I bought it.

thanks for the review of HF's pole saw.
i'll need one this winter.
my old Stihl saw would not run well when the spark arrestor was clogged.
it got clogged once too often, so i took it off.
26 years. starts on second pull.

Look around for a store that sells non ethanol gas and mix it yourself. Boat docks are good places but lots of gas stations have it now too.

As opposed to expensive chinese crap...good to know about the Stihl problems. I have an ancient Sears electric that admittedly I rarely use but it works every time I need it. Have replaced chain 2 or 3 times. Push button oiler doesnt work anymore but I manually oil bar and chain with Triflow.

Most of the newer saws have a clean air package that clogs up the motor. Find a saw shop that caters to the professional folks and is willing to "adjust" the motor for better performance or learn how to clean the carbon and remove the junk yourself. That said, for most homeowners purposes the electric saws are the way to go, cranks everytime if the battery is holding charge.
