So I have a cheap reflex on my 8.5" AR pistol. I was hitting 8" steal at 100 yards with this red dot yesterday and frankly I was amazed at the accuracy of this short barrel and this cheap sight. BUT, the battery died I guess and will replace to make sure tonight.

Question: how long do your sight batteries typically last? This was just a few hours of shooting.

It depends.

Cheap red dots aren't known for their longevity, build quality, or efficiency. They can burn through batteries quickly sometimes.

More expensive dots can run for literal years, on a single battery, without being shut off. Then there are semi-expensive dots (cough....cmore) that eat batteries for breakfast.

I have a couple of PA advanced dots that'll supposedly go a couple years. Neither have given me reason to doubt them. I've owned Aimpoints in the past that I changed the batteries every 2 years whether they needed it or not. I don't presently own any Aimpoints though. I have a couple of Vortex mini reflex sights that I've never changed the batteries in, but they have an autoshutoff feature.

Then I have a few Cmores that I make sure I put a fresh battery in before a match, because if not it'll bite me....

Personally I'm partial to Trijicon dual illuminated sights that never require batteries and are more astigmatism friendly.

5 years. When left on.

Aimpoint for the battery life win. Although admittedly I have not tested the 5 year thing myself. But it’s nice to know I have at least a few years leeway.

I have a Trijicon MRO that I haven’t turned off since early 2016. They’re rated for 5yrs at a medium setting and I’ve been testing that claim, so far, so good.
