Can anyone recommend a good spotting scope that is also cheap? I know it's hard to get both quality and low price when it comes to optics.

What are you trying to do with it? See holes in paper at distance? If so, what caliber, and what distance?

Not a scope , but;

Go search Craig's List for cheap camcorders.

You are after the ones that have 600 ~ 800 Digital Zoom.

Few years back I picked up a JVC Everio.

This cam uses SD Cards to record, etc., and has 800 Digital Zoom.
At times it can be a challenging to see 100 yds on different days, sunny, cloudy, etc.

Overall it has served me well enough and I paid 40 ~ 45 for it, yes used.

BTW, the JVC I have does not mention the 800 Zoom in the factory manual and the only reason I knew about it is I had access to a friends cam and that one had 800 Zoom as well.

FWIW

Yeah holes in paper. 223 and 308 from 50-200 yards. Just casual use and I don't expect to see 223 holes at 200 yards.

Bear in mind that your target material has a lot to do with the visibility. A 30 cal hole in a black target will be invisible where as a .22 cal hole on a white target will jump right out... Work it out....

Good and cheap do not equate. Pick one and go for it. You can't beat physics. If you attempt to cheat the only way is to go with less magnification and a smaller objective. You can still find good glass to see .22 holes at 100 yards, but if you are searching for holes at big distance you have to pay.

Konus sport makes decent spotting scopes and I've seen many folks using them at highpower matches. Decent quality at an affordable price point.

If you can swing it, I'd recommend buying a Kowa. I've been running one for the last 13 years without issue: crisp, clear and bright optics. They can be pricey though.

Seeing 223 holes at 200 yds is do-able, but it will depend on conditions. On good days, I can pick out 223 holes at 300 yards with the Kowa. Even on overcast days, I can pick out a 3" shot spotter at 600 yards.

Whatever scope you get, you can do a couple tricks to make it easier to pick out holes while on the range.
  • Cut a circular hole in your target backer and overlay your target aiming point on top of the hole. That allows light from the back and will brighten the holes.
  • Don't staple new targets over old ones. It's harder to see bullet holes through layers of paper
  • Bright sunlight glaring off the front of a target makes it hard to see holes
  • Shoot-n-see targets are great for those dark/overcast days :)

Konussport 7120 20x60 80mm, can spot .22 at 200, haven't tried it further.
Downsides, it's BIG on the edge of comical though not too heavy, focus is touchy on mine, chromatic aberration is definitely present at the top end which will probably kill spotting hits at long range, especially on a bright white target. Comes with a bench tripod and a couple camera/phone adapters. Got mine through Dvor on a decent sale a year or two back.

That Konus 7120 is on sale at Dvor today for $175
Join via this link https://www.dvor.com/s/8bo71d and I think I get reward points or something.
If you haven't signed up I'll tell you most of their sales aren't great, this one looks like it's maybe $10 off other places.

Keep an eye out on eBay for the Busnell Spacemasters. I got one to my door for $75, LNIB with the box. Here is one a bit newer than mine. If you search eBay, they guy wanting $400+ with the yellow box and backpack is what I got a couple years back.

I have one and agree. These were once used by Navy Seal Snipers back sometime ago.

This one looks very similar to the Spacemaster (same design and magnification) and might go for cheap.

What he said. Have had a Spacemaster in my gear for years and years. Something happened to the eyepiece where I started seeing black specs everywhere. Bushy replaced it for free. My shooting club has had one in the rifle target shed for at least 30 years and it takes a licking but keeps on tickin'.
