Heading there tomorrow thru saturday. What areas to have fun and nit get stabbed or mugged while people watching and boozing ?

Tagged for interest.

Friends want to go to N Myrtle or Carolina beach in July.

Cherry Grove area is a lot more laid back than Myrtle Beach, it's more of a family beach. If you want bigger crowds you''ll need to go south. Personally, I think Cherry Grove is a good choice. Just be gone before Memorial Day weekend.

Cherry Grove used to be da bomb 40-50 years ago. I dont go south of the border now. The crush of people and traffic is just unbearable to this 60 yr old. GG beach used to be one of the widest in the world at low tide. Nice and flat, good for walking but it's been 40 years since Ive been there so I am absolutely no help.

I’ll be heading down this morning as well. We’re staying in Myrtle beach state park, and will drive up to cherry grove to fish.

The plan is to mainly hang in cherry grove where we are staying and venture in NMb, but do have 1 night planned in myrtle.
My bro in law sorta filled us in on expectations there as he has been before. Also wifes colleagues suggested nit staying around after dark in myrtle.
Heard its a bit trashy depending on time of year, but honestly i would have expected that. Just wanna steer clear from super bad areas as not planning on carrying.

I go to north Myrtle every year since my MIL has a time share at Marriotts ocean watch. I feel pretty safe going anywhere and doing anything during the daylight hours. I almost always am back in the compound by dark. If you must hangout after dark I strongly suggest doing it far away from the strip. Unless I am at the pool or at the beach during the day I am carrying. Even when I go out to dinner I won’t have a drink so I can carry. Plenty of time to do that at the pool bar or in my room. Remember that all the roaches come out to cause trouble after dark.

The bad time of year is from January 1 up until New Year's Eve. Your wife's colleagues are correct.
I'm not understanding the not carrying.

Be sure and let me know when you're down this way. We can meet up for lunch sometime and at NMB you will be very close to @BatteryOaksBilly .

I will be down there In late June and will Definitely do that. I had thoughts about contacting you all before I came. Maybe bringing a few extra rounds with me ;)

We used to go to Surfside/Murrell's Inlet/state park area, and it was okay (especially off-season). I would not go into M/NM willingly, period. Cherry Grove was the shizz when I was young. Not so much now, imo. But I am big on crisis avoidance and I really do not like crowds, so that area has lost a lot of its appeal for me. YMMV.

I lived in cherry grove for five years. We moved from there in '15 and I've been back a few times since then. You can go anywhere in cherry grove after hours without worry. I think CG is still a pretty healthy mix of residents and tourists. As for NMB, IF you are going to go out at night, the safest places are around Fat Harold's. There is a lot of shagging history around there and it attracts an older crowd. Stay away from Kings HWY and especially the area around Atlantic Beach where all the strip clubs are. Just remember the farther north you go, the better you are. If you want seafood, go to calabash. Eat at Ella's. Its not on the water, but the food is better. I don't know if its still there but there used to be a joint called Local's in the bottom floor of the Blockade Runner hotel in CG that had the best chili cheese burger you've ever eaten. If you're looking for places to fish/ boats to go out on, let me know.

Thx guys. Appreciate the input.
Got here an hour or so ago. CG seems pretty mild. Lots if tourists judging from the abundance of ohio plates ive spied. Biker week i guess in MB.
Wifey and I are sitting outdoors sucking down the cocktails (hence no carrying) enjoying the scenery.
I think we have one night in MB...medievel times..to relive our vegas experience. Heh. Nit sure how long well spend in MB afterward. Prolly head back this way.

Used to have signs up "Nation's Widest Beaches". No More. They built jetties just north of CG and south of Garden City. In Cherry grove there are houses on the North end that have had water slapping up on the steps for years. No more wide beaches. STILL, my pick for visiting!!!!

Yep, it's Bike Week. Most of that activity is held south of MB now though.

MB = Detroit on the beach

Bike week - lots of bikes on the roads to and around Southport yesterday (Friday)

Down here now near Calabash. Lots of bikes yesterday. Dont go near the HD dealer in Shallotte on 17. Mad house with cops directing traffic. Bike Festivities supposed to be over Sunday. Bunch of frat boys kept us up half the night. I didnt have the heart to call the cops ( I was 18 once) but will tonight if it continues. Called rental agency and they said owner was staying there not a renter. They said they would call owner and for me to call the cops if I so desired. I dont sleep well anyway. May be getting to old for this s#it. Wife got out of the car yesterday and immediately started sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose. Was running a fever this a.m. Just my luck.

Made it back home a little bit ago. We drove down 17 a bit on Friday and didnt make it into MB at all due to time constraints..had a boat ride scheduled and traffic was crazy.
It was ... interesting.. everywhere we went in CG and NMB...definitely need to go back when it is not bike week. Weird mix of folks...lots of what Id call your normal biker dudes, those who ride for fun work on your bike and chill with your buddies...then the other end of the spectrum hardcore looking ones that you wouldnt want to run into in a dark alley. Heh.
No issues anywhere..didnt see any fights in the streets, etc.. but we also didnt stay out late either.

Hit cherry grove in September/October. Fishing is killer, most kids have gone back to school, and Canadians haven't came in yet. Tough to beat.

We got home around 5 yesterday afternoon. We stay at Myrtle Beach State Park, and I travelled to cherry grove to fish Friday and Saturday. Caught a nice flounder Saturday morning. We’re planning on going back in October I believe for the fall bike rally, hoping to do more fishing in cherry grove then as well.

Close to a one hour trip this week end. Try Garden City Pier, 15 minutes away.

If you use 22, 31 and the Grissom Parkway it can be done in under 40 minutes. I did it about 4 times this weekend. Sorry I didn't get to swing by man but at those Crossfit comps, it's all business from beginning to end. I'm tired af and didn't even do anything but drive and feed my athlete ;)

didnt make it into MB
That's why all was fine. Very Few motorcycles in MB for this week end. Come try next week end...Hell on Earth.
. Weird mix of folks.
No mix next week end.
didnt see any fights in the streets
Next week you will see open fornication in the streets. No Poleeece to enforce anything. Restaurant owners already told..Do Not call us for walkouts.
didnt stay out late either.
This is a No=No in city of MB. Don't confuse other places with the Hell that is Murder Beach.

Daaang. Yeah, glad we didnt make it into MB proper then..even with the milder group this last weekend (from what you describe). Heh. Holy smokes...

Next beach trip we think we will keep in on the NC side in OIB. A lot less people to deal with there and no partying bikers.
