Do they hibernate in that area of the country?
It's normal to see them looking obese pre-hibernation in Northern New England.

ETA, baiting with extremely high calorie food (donuts etc) really packs on the lbs.
It is not unheard of for guides to begin baiting them very early fall in order to add weight so their sports can harvest a heavy animal.

This was taken in southwest Virginia in the Blue Ridge mountains. I'm pretty sure that they hibernate there.
