Yesterday I got my new PSA AR-9 pistol. I put a Vortex Red Dot and a flash can on it.

AR92.jpg

This morning I took it to the range to get the red dot dialed in. This thing is a pleasure to shoot. At the range, someone had left a target up so I used it. After I got it centered, I moved the target to 25 yards, the maximum on the pistol range. In the upper left corner of the target was a clean area that had only one 22 hole. I put a paster over it and tried a 3 shot group. My old eyes and a red dot don't really get along but not much I can do about it. I fired 3 rounds and it was a good group. Yes, it was only 25 yards but, I think I could do OK for what the gun is meant for. I'll try it at a longer distance next time.

As soon as I fired the 3rd round, I felt something on my left hand. I looked and my hand was right at the end of the flash can. I was using a makeshift rest and I guess I kept extending my arm out after each round. I was expecting to see blood and meat but I just had some blackening and a minor burn. I got lucky this time. Anyone got a hand stop that they aren't using?

1st glad you are ok. 2nd IMHO some type of hand stop is a must on ar style pistols. 3rd nice shooting sir. Looks like you have a keeper!

I use these:

Aren't they a vendor here?

They are a NC company.

They were, and had a small discount for members. Not seeing their vendor badge anymore.

Please, be very careful what you Attach to that Pistol.....it might push it over the imaginary ATFE line into SBR land.
I always obey the law. I ordered one of these dingus things.

Good thing you had a flash can and not a muzzle brake or flash hider or you would have more than a little black smudge.

That was one of the first things I thought of. It came with an A2 style flash hider. I had the extra flash can around so I stuck it on there. Glad I did.

The worst thing I ever personally saw was an idiot hand a SBR w/ suppressor to a newbie AFTER running a few mags thru it without warning them the suppressor was HOT! Yep, the right hand went to the grip and part of left hand on the 500° suppressor … the thumb and index finger. You could see the skin left on the can after the poor guy dropped the gun screaming.

Very good to be careful about this. I was at the range a few years ago and one member had a vertical grip on his AK-47 pistol,
he offered me to shoot it but I declined.
The Angled Fore Grip is not considered a vertical grip, I run them on my two AR pistols. This link has copies of the BATF&E letters.

Bipods are ok to use on pistols, AR or others, Ruger Charger for example, as long as the bipod is not a vertical grip.

I have hand stops installed on 2 of 3 AR pistols with cans for this reason. I think they are BCMs. The only reason the 3rd doesn't is that there isn't enough clearance between the can and rail. It is mounted backwards but being right handed I run it into the fatty part between my left thumb and index and can push the gun forward to control the recoil etc.

Here it is on the 22lr.

Glad you are ok Larry. Have about the same setup and I wouldn’t even shoot mine before I installed a hand stop on it. I just didn’t trust myself..

Long story short, through a mutual friend I heard about a guy that shot through the top of his finger while shooting someone else’s .22 AR pistol (might have been an SBR but I don’t remember) with a can on it, the outcome ended up being pretty dang bad even with a lowly .22lr, I imagined a larger caliber would have been worse so I’ve always been mindful of where my hands go while shooting a short barreled weapon.

Every single AR pistol or Scorpion pistols my family owns has a hand stop installed on it, my wife & daughter both own them so I shared the story above with them and spent many range trips training them to be mindful on the risks of getting the support hand too far forward, much to my delight, my daughter brought a friend shooting and she jumped right in and went over what the hand stop is for and why it is there before she let her friend shoot the CZ, she actually listened lol.

Geezer I’m glad everything worked out for you man and I know that experience definitely spooked you enough to not do that again, I’m sure you’re a fan of all 10 fingers like I am lol

Thanks for the reminder. I need to figure out a solution for this one:

I bought a hand stop/angled foregrip/whatever for it, but there’s not enough clearance for the screws/nuts due to the can.

Maybe I can epoxy it in place? I had a similar issue with a 9mm build and it ended up being a really tight fit for the hand stop to fit in the slots. So I jammed it in there and then decorated it with some paracord.

If both are like materials (6061 maybe??? … 7075 is not really a choice though) a nice little TIG welding would be my thought.

Are the round holes on the handguard threaded? That might be worth a look to see if you could screw in a length of rail.

Can’t remember. I’ll pull it out of the safe this week and check. Even if they’re not, I have a set of taps.

don't bother with the screws to lock it in place, the guard itself will have nubs to fit in the mlok slots. you can use the paracord wrap to do the rest?

That is mine HD gun. I know it is only a 9mm but putting a can on the end takes care of that problem and shooting inside of your house.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but that line is still imaginary, yes? (i.e. Proposed Rule 2021R-08 is still just that: 'proposed', correct?)

I'm asking to make sure I didn't miss something...

I may be wrong, but I don’t think that’s what he’s talking about. But maybe it is.

I think it’s more the issue of it being an AOW (not SBR) depending on what gets attached to the handguard.
