Hey everyone,
I've been shooting at Camp Perry the past few years and planning on Butner this year.
Just out of curiosity, how many of you participate in competition as well?

I have for about 4yrs now, Garand/Springfield and Vintage Sniper. Fun matches, nice friendly people, but match fees are a bit high IMO. The 30rd Garand/Springfield matches are around $50 (havent checked this year yet) Butner is a "return home" of sorts for me as I used to shoot there 2-3 times a month when I was OIC of my NG M16 team.

Probably won`t make it this year though. Retina surgery 5 March and I`m not real sure of recovery time. Sux, but such is life I guess. I`d like to shoot the Creedmoor Cup one time too.

Shot Service Rifle for USAR teams from 1975 to 1982. Camp Perry every year along with Army Matches.

Went Distinguished with M14/M1A but started at Division level with M16.

Butner, Cherry Point, Oak Ridge, Camp Blanding, FL were regular civilian matches.

I've been doing Perry for about 4 years as well. I also shoot the Garand, Springfield, and vintage matches. This will be my first year going to butner. I agree that the fee is a little high but it is what it is.

Hate to here about the surgery and good luck with it. I see that you are close to me. Maybe we meet up one day.

How do yall like butner in comparison to perry? I've heard good and bad about the electronic targets system.

I shoot at the Conover range, and hang out on occasion at Ledford`s. Scott and I have been drinking buddies since high school, lol.

They`re restarting a High Power program at the Conover range 22 Feb. Not sure of the fee ($15 I think) but it is open to the public

never shot Perry, but the electronic tgts CMP uses are pretty good for the most part. The only real issue I`ve seen with them is, if it`s a hot day the monitors will sometimes get too hot and stop working.

I didnt know there was a range out there. I'll definitely have to check it out. I've been going down to foothills but as you probably know that not very conducive to practicing for cmp matches. Plus I hate getting asked if the 03 is a mosin nagant every time I go down there lol.

I've heard that rain messes with the electronic targets too...

I'll be at butner this year. Experienced the electronic targets last year at the talladega 600 and I was not impressed. I had more "complete misses" according to the targets than any other match ive competed in. I wasnt the only one having issues, a marine instructor was shooting next to me in the springfield match. He was in contention to win the match with a 199 8x after the second leg. Registered two complete misses on the third, he protested but there was no way to verify because the cardboard backing for the targets hadnt been changed. I should also mention that it was in the high 30's and raining.

Hopefully the weather at butner this year will be good and wont have target issues. Maybe I'll see you out there Swagger

I shoot every year if I am able. I intend to be there again this year.

I've been shooting highpower since 2004 with the M1A but eventually transitioned over to the black rifle. I haven't been up to Butner since last summer, but I spent A LOT of time up there where I was chasing leg points. If you can master the wind at Butner, you can shoot just about anywhere!

Good news to hear about Conover! Is George Northam still running the matches, or did someone else take the helm? Any links for the match info?

I forwarded this thread to the CMP Match Director @ Catawba Valley Rifle & Pistol Club. Hopefully he can give you folks more information.

We have approval by the club to stand up the 2020 High Power Rifle Program at the Catawba Valle Rifle & Pistol Club.

This Saturday is the first match. Hoping to get some new shooters to matches. Therefore this is our beginner match. Will be a 600 agg. (All prone position)

2 strings rapid fire 200 yds.
2 strings rapid fire 300 yds.
300 yard slow fire on MR63 (600 yds)

Match fee this month is just $10.

I hope to have the new shooters be introduced to match format commands, learn to shoot, score, and pull and Mark in our Pits! YES, Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club has working Pitts!
Future matches will be regular 800 agg across the course or mid range prone matches. F-class if interest.
My email is [email protected]
For any questions.

Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club held its first High Power Rifle Match in several years today. After a winter storm blew into the Catawba Valley just 36 hours before the Match competitors arrived at the range greeted by a cool 26 degrees.

The day began sunny and slowly warmed throughout the day.

We had 8 competitors shoot the match with a few spectators.

The match was geared for the “New to Matches” shooter.

We had 4 of 8 who were new to matches!

The match was a all Prone Match to exercise the fundamentals in the prone position. It was the very first time for some shooting with match rifles, coats and gloves! We are looking forward to many more HP Matches in the near future!

I need to get out for the next one...

I ordered a Creedmoor Sports Hardback Shooting Coat today. I have been using a soft coat for several years, but everybody that is anybody has been telling me the Hardback will up my offhand scores significantly. I hope they are correct, but it certainly can't hurt. I can't wait to get it and start practicing with it.

I was concerned about getting a coat made and shipped in time for Butner, so when I called, I had them check the existing inventory (i.e. the customer returns). Luckily, they had one in stock with my exact measurements. It also already had some upgrades like ventilation and a few other things. It ended up being like $400 +/- a couple of bucks, out the door, shipped. And apparently, I also get a $75 gift certificate on top of that. Not sure what I will burn that on, but I am sure I will find something.

Ammo....with that sweet Lapua brass....

I got some of that when they were doing the half price with purchase of a rifle deal. My H&R does not like it, but I think the Rack Special with the Criterion will. Regardless, the brass is pretty nice.

Holy frijoles! These hardbacks are no joke. It is heavy as hell and stiff as a board. I am going to have to practice just to get into this thing and breathe, much less set up the rifle/sling for it. I think it has to help with standing, because you sure as heck ain't gonna move around much in it.

Oh yeah....my standing went up quite a bit from the old soft green coat I wore for decades...lol

Helps with my scoliosis too!

Creedmoor does makes a good coat. I've had my hardback for nearly 17 years and it's still chugging along. It is bit long in tooth though... elbow zipper is blown out and rubber is tearing in places. I almost hate to part with it, but I'm contemplating buying another.

But at the end of the day, the coat just holds everything together. It still takes a hard holder to consistently punch out the 10-ring on their hind legs.

Enjoy the coat!
