Has anyone gone to the CMP South store lately? I'm planning to drive there next Friday with one of my buddies but I'm a little concerned about how many Garands they have in stock. I tried calling and emailing but haven't been able to get a hold of anyone. We are both looking to buy a field or service grade. Do they usually a good selection to choose from?

Holy crap I just drive right past that and didn't know it. *kick*

The last time I was down there, the retail space at the south store was a fraction of what it used to be. The place was mainly dedicated as an air rifle competition center.

Since they got those 86,000 Garands back from the Philippines, and 15,000 more from Turkey, the new South Store has been pretty full. If you go, there should be a nice selection to choose from.

Are you guys going and then coming back? Would be interested in a a member tagging along?

A day trip is doable but it’s a long haul. It was around a 6 hour drive from Charlotte

We would leave around 0600 to miss Atlanta rush hour. Get some lunch then spend a couple hours at the CMP store. Leave by 1400 to miss Atlanta traffic and home by 2000

I could probably look this up, but it's so much easier to ask y'all!!

What's the purchase policy at teh AL store for NC residents? If one meets all the criteria for buying through their mail order process, can one purchase a firearm at the store in AL?

Yes. But as I understand it, if you take the rifle home that day, you have to pay AL sales tax. If you let them ship it to you, then no tax. Also, from the store reports I have seen, the racks are full at opening, but can be pretty bare by the end of the day. So if you go, you will want to be there by 7:30 am or so to be one of the first in to get a good pick. Lots of IHC's and even rack grade SA's and H&R's are being put out. I am torn between making a run to AL and waiting to see what they put out at Butner in April.

Thought about it, but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.

I plan to shoot again this year, but have not yet registered. If you are gonna shoot, let me know when or what days and maybe we can squad up.

CMP website has a message board/ forum

in that forum, there is a thread on south store.. .in that section are usually weekly updates from knowledgeable folks

study those a while to get an idea of what is being stocked. recently on thursdays opening about 60 to 75 rifles
most seem to be rack grade/ field grade, very few service grades.

entire message board is good....

I think that you have to show airline tickets to get them to ship it to you these days. Otherwise you have to take it with you.

I also think you have to pay AL tax either way - 10% ?

Call the CMP sales / Cust support to check also. Store is only open Thur-Sat so maybe that’s why no answer to your phone calls if you were calling the store number.

I envy you - I’d love to go sometime!

Yep, if you make the purchase in person at the South store be prepared for the 10% sales tax. They're opening a satellite store of sorts at the Talledega marksmanship park. Being in a different county it's only 8% there

But you do get to see what it is you're buying before you pay for it vs. mail order.

Although I have had CMP send me 3 outstanding service grade rifles, absolutely happy with each one.

So, do ya feel lucky?

Yep. Sometimes the 10% is worth it. I've mail ordered a couple, but have paid the tax for a carbine and Garand before!
