I had a few days of vacation time left to use this year so I drove down to Talladega, AL and shot in the CMP Talladega 600 matches this week. Traffic through Atlanta always sucks and it was pretty chilly down there, but still had a good time shooting and catching up with buddies. If you don't know, the whole range complex uses electronic targets. I arrived late Tuesday while they were finishing up the M16 EIC match, but afterwards they let some of the shooters have an open sighting period, just before sundown. I shot in the Dixie Double match, 4-man team match, Congressional 30 match and M14 match Gotta love those eTargets down there. Real time stats shown in the clubhouse and the matches run very quick. Had a good day shooting the Congressional 30 match, which uses the President's 100 course of fire (10 round standing @ 200yds, 10 rounds rapid fire prone @ 300 yds, 10 round slow fire prone @ 600yds... no sighting shots). Managed to make the cut the first time I ever shot the match, with a 288-8X (94-2x, 96-1x, 98-5x). Had a good 600 yard string, despite my neighbor cross-firing on my target Attendance seemed to thin out as the week went on, but I think they were expecting a bunch of folks for the Garand/Springfield/Vintage/Sniper matches this weekend. A bunch of folks we talked to were bailing early to beat the coming snow on their travel day(s). If you ever get a chance, make the drive down there to shoot. Great range for sure!
The CMP is one organization every shooter should support. With enough support the possibility of a similar range could be in our future.
Had plans a while back to go there. Have a bud who lives near there. We were going to shoot an F class match. Weather turned nasty b4 we were to go and stayed nasty so we didnt go after all. Hope to get There one day.
