I have been using 124gr coated lead bullets for my reloads in 9mm. I have noticed that alot of powder manufacturers don't list coated bullets in the data. What do you use to do your start load from? FMJ? Lead? Thanks

I used to use the bluebullets and found the same. I used lead and it worked fine. Read somewhere that was an acceptable method, can't recall where.

I contacted Badman and ACME and both said to use Lead or Plated bullet data. I've had great success doing that.

I saw an article some time back that did a comparison of the various bullet types, and they concluded that coated bullets act more like lead bullets for reloading purposes. Plated bullets actually were closer to FMJ. I typically use the Speer data for my plated loads, as they list their TMJ bullets. TMJs are just thick plated lead.

Usually looking for PF floors lead data will get you there, 9 major being an exception of course, but I usually don't bother starting at the minimum.

Where coated bullets differ is lubed lead generally maxes out due to velocity causing leading issues, good coatings prevent this from happening until a much higher velocity without gas checks so you can push them faster, of course then you get into an area where you have to watch for pressure because there is no data.

My experience for gamer loads is to just ask, hey I have a coated 135 and X powders what have you guys had luck with for minor? Here I usually get relevent info, elsewhere I often get a bunch of replies about 147s, maybe some 124s, definitely someone going on about something plated or jacketed, a bunch unlisted powders, I then reference the applicable stuff to some published data and as long as nothing screams crazy start there or a couple tenths lower.

I asked Eggleston Munitions about loads when I ordered some 98gr .380 bullets from them and couldn't fine any lead data. He told me that coated lead bullets typically get 10%-15% more velocity over the same powder charge compared to a jacketed bullet.

Just another data point.
