Coincidences, Karma, whatever you want to call it.
I think its funny and interesting how things work out sometimes.

As many on here know, Im a high school educator. One of the perks of my job is about 2 months free each year in the summer. Pretty rad. But its also two dang months of not much to do.
I'll mow/yard work. I'll do a little stuff school related that I can also translate into sales on my TpT site (teachers pay teachers). I'll meet with friends. I'll do more exercise. Read more, too. Oh, and I'll take a 5-7 day vacation each summer, my one vacay of the year.

But, man, how much is there really to do? When youre broke there isnt a lot you can do.
I get cabin fever in the house, so I look for reasons to get out of the house on the cheap (I like coffee, thats my go-to).

So yesterday, returning from getting coffee in High Point I got to thinking, "I got to find something to do, and extra money would be good...wonder who I can call to ask for a job a few days a week...like sweeping floors, errands, whatever."

Not an hour later I get a random text...precisely that. A few days a week driving a truck.

Coincidence?
Karma for not being a total jerk?
I dont know, I'd like to think the karma one, personally.
But I met with my new boss today, someone I've known for years through hardcore/metal shows, and later seeing at gun shows. Someone near and dear to all of our hearts. A big beast of a man, Dan.

I look forward to meeting a new coworker tomorrow, another member here.

Im really excited about this opportunity and wanted to share with my friends on this site. Just odd how things work out sometimes.

It works both ways alas. Sometimes when you really don't need a specific occurrence, it happens.

Good luck with the new job

Thanks
Its helping both of us, apparently. They need extra help during summer and dont want to hire to have to turn around and lay off after a few months, and Im only available about 2 months till my job is going again.
It'll be extra money, get me out of the house, meeting new people.

Im pretty stoked on it all

@wsfiredude will break you in right tomorrow morning. Karma, dumb luck, god, whatever you want to blame it on it happens quite a bit if you just pay attention.
Im looking forward to it.
I know its just part time, but I love getting experience in many different things.
New people.
New stories.
New experiences.

Is the coffee really that good there or do the yoga pants make up for it?

The coffee is great. Today I chose butterscotch
Southern Pecan is my fav here though.
They always have 5 kinds ready. Or maybe its 6.
Large coffee, with tax, a tip over 2 bucks. And the scenery is nice.

Montana's spring bear season continues into June I believe. Seems like a good way to spend time.

Hey, I'd love to spend some time out in Montana right now...but, please remember, Im broke.
There's a reason I do ONE vacation a year, though I make the most of it ...within reason = money.

@Jeppo
Youre near HP, right?
You let me know when and I'll buy you a cup, its in HP just across the DC border.
Free cup of coffee, if you dont like it then youre out nothing but some time and gas to get to and from.
But its good coffee and Im decent company for the most part.

And there's a guy here in the evenings that's a huge gun guy.
I spotted him from his Beretta tee lol

I'm 3 miles from there. Do most of my gun deals at Sheetz across the street. ;)

Oh...I assure you; they will be legion.:D

Seriously though, it's a damned good job. I've been at it for 3 years now and I've got no complaints.

I understand. I'm pinching pennies right now to save for an elk hunt in a few years.

It was a pleasure meeting you

I didnt realize Chad was there too, awesome.

LOL....

love it.
BTW, I broke out the free men do free shit line today on a couple unsuspcting friends over a gun control talk. One was a heavily armed pro- gun guy and one is a non-armed pro gun guy. They both paused and said heck yeah. Fun stuff. Future mafia members.

"...setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men."

Good on ya!;)

Sam Adams said that's what it'd require.

Since this thread has been brought back up I figure I'll update yall

I dig it.
There have been some stumbles along the way, one in particular, but it's been really good. I work with some great guys, see places all over the Triad, and even found my first 'dumpster find' this week - a brand new, though dirty, Timbuk2 Commuter messenger bag (msrp on their site is 120 bucks!). I sprayed it off and then took a scrubbing brush to it and it's looking great.

I am very thankful for the opportunity that I've been given.
Though it'll be over soon, as school will be kicking off in a couple weeks, Dan has expressed I can come back next summer, on breaks etc, and I will take him up on that when the time comes.

It's gotten me out of the house and given me some walking around money

It gets hot in the truck Im typically in when it's hot outside, but that's just sweat.
It get's dusty some days, I get dirty, but that's just dirt and it washes off too.
ALl the 'cons' of the job are so basic and easily fixable once the work day is over. I'd recommend it to others, without a doubt

I had a teacher way back when (late 70s) who filled his summers with self-employment in the cheesiest way I ever remembered:

He painted house numbers on curbs.

Yep...charged $5 a pop at the time.

He'd walk neighborhoods and make his sales pitch for painting house numbers on the curb as a way to make it easier for people to find their house...for only $5.

After he walked an entire neighborhood and took his orders, he'd pull out his paint box with the background form (a rectangle cutout for spray painting the background on the curb) and stencil form (which he'd slip the number stencils on, which matched the background form size) and spray paints.

Then he'd do the entire neighborhood in one pass: set the background up to the curb and shoot the background spray paint. Jig up the number stencils and shoot them against thebackground. Move to the next.

He said it was easy to get $100 a neighborhood this way...and the funny part was the people who turned him down later were likely to be customers after seeing how their neighbors looked afterwards. Think about this in terms of 1970s income.

AND...it was cash on the barrel, with all that meant with respect to taxes.

He worked whatever days and hours he felt, and said it was easy to make a lot more doing that than what he got paid as a teacher.

Lots of teachers have side hustles.
I know a lot that drive for Amazon, Uber, and Lyft.
One guy at my school does blinds (budget blinds, I think, is who he contracts for) on Saturdays.
Real estate.
Retail.

You are welcome to come stay in the Bunk House on the range and shoot ALL your ammo up. We can usually make arrangements to have it vacant for a particular stretch. And it's FREE!

That bag I found, I just heard back from Timbuk2 on what it is - it was, indeed, one of their Commuter bags, but custom made for the company (Lundbeck), so not something that could be ordered independently. I'd say that's a super score then!

Dude next time you have time off hit me up and we can go to DPRC and pop some caps. It will be cheap and fun I promise.
It's fun out there on weekdays. Ghost town.

Ive got almost all this week

When I was in middle school (late seventies, rural SC), my algebra teacher (also the girls' basketball coach) and my English teacher (also the PE teacher) worked summers in the peach orchards in central SC. They didn't look for the easy gigs, that's for sure.

Whats a good day??
Where is it exactly? That'll determine when is best for me
Soccer has begun, so that messes with my days some

My brother, a math teacher, worked part time at Home Depot for 17 year. Near full time in the summer. That brought in an extra $17K a year. Not bad for a part time.
He quit that when he moved to Maine. He teaches just over the border in NH now. He has more time. But he doesn't have the extra coin anymore. And he took a cut in his teacher pay too. [Teaching is the one profession where they aren't treated like professionals. They are at the mercy of what taxpayers can afford. ]

Spent five years at Home Depot
Good gig, but I left there because it just wasnt worth it anymore. The pay wasnt that great, even after five years, and I got tired of retail.
Who knows, maybe at some point I do some retail again, but Im in no rush, some real jerk customers out there
