You can order varieties that do not spread by seed. I ordered some from here last year. It is healthy and growing well, but totally non-invasive. You can, however, dig the roots up and get a new plant out of really tiny pieces, so if you want a lot of comfrey, and you can patient for a year or two, you can still get it with this stuff.
 
We've got a small patch of it in a tub sitting in the garden. We just grow it for the chickens, they love the stuff and it's a nice treat for them. That single batch has "died" a few times, wilted, been cut down to nothing, and it still comes back.
