Romanian gun are cheap junk. (25 yards)

You need a $1000 Arsenal or a Vepr to really experience a quality AK. (25 yards)

All AK's are inaccurate junk that can't hit a man sized target at 100 yards.

Lost the SAR pic, but similar group at 100. Both using a 1-4x optic on an RS Regulate side mount. The exact same optic and mount on both rifles.

Oh, and here's my SAR-1 @Magdump cerakoted. It's actually got a better finish than an Arsenal now.

Oh gosh, where even to begin? I can think of 100 myths and misconceptions, but without giving it any thought the following come to mind.
  • That the AK isn't accurate
  • That the AK isn't customizable
  • That the AK is a copy of the Sturmgewehr
  • That the AK is invincible under any circumstances
  • That every AK is an AK-47
  • That every AK is fully automatic
  • That the AK is a "machine gun"
  • That corrosive ammo is bad, or that you need Windex to wash your gun after shooting it
  • That steel cased ammo is bad
  • That lacquered ammo is bad
  • That the WASR sucks
  • That I have enough AKs in my safe right now

A 4 MOA AR15 would be considered garbage by most, no?
I think 4 MOA is baseline for service M4's.

Edit: Maybe not "baseline". I think "deemed acceptable".

4 MOA is currently considered by the army as passable for zeroing the M4 platform allowing you to move to qualifying with your weapon, but when you're deployed obviously things are a bit different. During deployment, Zeroing and accuracy are practiced at the team levels instead of a larger unit level like qualification is. Therefore it's up to you and your team and environment just how you zero your rifle and optics also come into play.

The Romanian G kit I just got shoots just as good if not better than my service issued M4. And just happens to be more left handed friendly. Sometimes I daydream when I'm in the field of turning in my M4 for an AK.

Being a tanker, I wish they would just issue us underfolder and call it a day. Or at least an MP5...[emoji17]

Things I’ve heard:
- overgassed
- bolt slams to the rear

An inaccurate gun doesn’t hold my attention.
The AK’s were a lot more appealing when 7.62x39 was dirt cheap.

I kinda wish they weren't as appealing as they are right now! The market has flipped upside down ... basic ARs are +/- $400 everywhere and all day long, but you're going to need $600+ to get in on the AK game at the most basic level. Quality 7.62x39 is still less than 20 CPR, but yeah - gone are the days of $100 barreled parts kits and ammo for 10 cents a round.

I've always wanted an AK. Maybe someday if prices come down. But I guess because I grew up in the 70's/80's I just can't shake the idea that it is a $400 gun. And that adjusted for inflation! They're nostalgic novelties to me, as they don't do anything an AR can't do, and when it comes to options (lights, optics, bipods, sling mounts, sights, etc), they do a lot less.

But they are awesome weapons for sure. But compared to a modern AR it just feels heavy & clunky and..... oldschool AF. Because it is. Still want one though.

I miss Roses. I think there's a couple left but they're junk stores now.
Pretty sure they don't have barrels of SKS's anymore either.
There's one in Fuquay. They're an outlet for Variety Wholesalers in Henderson, NC. The warehouses there are packed with all sorts of stuff. I don'r believe they carry any guns anymore. Back in the day I saw a rare Brit .303 jungle carbine for $99. Ran to get cash, came back within 45 min and it was gone. :(

One in Morganton too. I've been meaning to check it out for old time's sake.

I miss the old Rose's. SKS's $69, Enfields $49, VZ24 $89, Swedish Mauser $69, Mosin Nagants $39 and dirt cheap surplus ammo.

and I wish that the 5.45x39 wasn’t so hard to get (compared to 7.62x39). I really like that round!!
I mean, it's still out there, but those $70 spam cans aren't. And as a result finding a quality 5.45 rifle is not as easy as picking up a WASR from a pawn shop.

I really enjoy shooting it too. Never should have traded away my SGL.

Red Army Standard is importing Vympel made (think "Golden Tiger" brand) 5.45x39. It has worked well for me. Academy's Monarch (Barnaul made) is always available on the shelf and online and is decent range fodder. There's a good amount of poison bullet brands out there for us ... especially so if you don't mind shopping online.

We had one in Lenoir too. I remember as a teenager seeing SKS’s for $79 and Chinese AK’s around $300. From time to time they would have a 50 gallon trash can slammed full of SKS’s on sale. Man if we only had a time machine. We’d be like Biff on Back to the Future.

Roses in North Murder Beach. No SKSs.

Billy,

I remember when I lived in NMB in the mid-90s that the Roses near the Ryan's steakhouse on 17N had some SKSs still in stock circa 1996-ish. Of course I worked at the Ryan's and was broke af, so....no Chi-Com goodness for me.

I actually had a Roses' SKS that I traded a Sony CD player for (so about $150). I then sold it for around $200 and thought I was doing well. I would pay twice that to have it back now and all the original furniture that I removed for that god-aweful folding ATI stock and plastic duckbill mag.

Bought my first AK (Chinese) at the Roses in Westwood shopping center, off Morganton road, in Fayette'nam back in 86...the Roses is still there, but its been more than 20+ years since I have seen a firearm in there.

Only AK I've ever owned was a Saiga that I converted about 10 years ago. It worked well for what it was. I was never a fan of the ergonomics, and even the improved trigger I put in it was long and creepy, even if it was light.

I eventually put a cheap red dot on it, and shooting it from a rest, I managed to get 4 inch, 5-shot groups out of it at 100 yards. It did what it was designed to do. It was a heck of a carbine for about $300. But I wouldn't pay much more for one today. I wish I still had it today, so I could sell it again, and make a little money on it. :D

I've still got the $99 SKS that my father gave me when I was 12. I think I'll hang onto it. I'd probably shoot it a lot more if the trigger in it didn't feel like communism.

As much as I tend to subscribe to the notion of...

...there are some decent non-permanent methods for adjusting/improving an old combloc trigger. Check out the MCarbo replacement spring. It's also American made so you don't have to worry about feeling dirty when you shoot it :p

This one started as NHM91 purchased from Roses in Zebulon. It was the display model so I got it for $189 I remember carrying it thru the store and out thru the parking lot against my shoulder as it didn't have a box either.

It got some laminated Russian furniture and a Norinco bipod. It's one accurate AK.

Definitely wont be doing that anymore. Last time I bought a cheap shotgun at WalMart they tried to disassemble it before they boxed it back up so I "Couldn't use it before I got outside".

Yeah, well Roses sold not long after this and hasn't had guns since. Darn shame, they were like having AIM Surplus down the street to paw though over lunch break.

End of an era, you're right.

Some of the myths about AKs stem from the fact that they are built from salvaged parts back into a workable gun. Never mind the condition of the parts prior to cutting for import to US, very few had really top quality or new parts. Couple that with the next fact of most AK ammo being shot in the US was combloc milsurp and you have a recipe for bad accuracy. So sketchy parts poor quality ammo, any wonder many don't shoot worth a crap?

I've pulled some of the milsurp apart and the variance in components would be shocking to most reloaders. Bullets varying by +-.002 in size and by as much as 10gr in mass. Powder charges also varying by more than 5 gr. No wonder they don't shoot accurately even with a new barrel. If you handload, some AK owners have found the guns shoot very well with .311 bullets. Slug your barrel first before trying this.

I hand picked my last kit and got a very nice Polish underfolder. With US, brass cases commercial ammo from Remington, it'll hold about 2moa most of the time. Not bad for an iron sighted commie gun. With combloc milsurp, it does about 4-5moa.

I think your 2 MOA is more common of the rifle's capability than most folks think. Just think, 2 MOA with what is essentially handgun sight radius.
