First, let me give some background information.

I've purchased a set of thin, flexible solar panels that mount on the hood of the vehicle to keep my lithium auxiliary battery charged, which keeps my beer cold. During the ordering process, I was asked to confirm the dimensions on my vehicle before they manufactured them so I get the feeling this is the first for my type of vehicle. These are made-to-order panels, especially for an application such as mine and the manufacturer previously had only a CAD design to show on their website. I noticed that changed to an image of the actual solar panels just after my panels were shipped. The day after they were delivered, they ( a different person, looks like marketing dept by the email signature) asked if they arrived safely and asked for a picture of them mounted on my vehicle.

Do you think I should be compensated in some way if they are going to put my image of my truck on their website? I'm not one to look for compensation for every little thing I do but it's different when someone else is making profit from my work.

Thanks

Did you have a contract with said company? if yes, check the fine print so you don’t waste your time.
if no contract, then no big deal to ask. Worst case you will get “no sir, we don’t do that”.

If it's a small business doing custom work, do them a solid and help them out. I've been the recipient of a lot of that and I really do appreciate it. And I've done it with companies and products I had a good experience with as well.

I wouldnt have an issue doing that. Id def see if they would at least send you a shirt.

Id be interested in what company you ordered from as these sound unique.

Tell the you will sale them the rights to the image for $189 NFC. 😃

So they are using the picture you took? Pretty sure that picture is your property. Not sure that you can get much, if anything from them, but never hurts to ask. I suggest saying that if they’d have asked you’d have probably just said yes, but since they assumed without asking it’ll cost them some marketing swag. I doubt they’d ever pay cash.

Get paid any way you can. They plan to use the image to make money. Models get paid. So should you.
I take off the license plate frame than has the dealer name on it from every car I buy. I hate it when they rivet a dealer emblem on a car.
I do the same thing with the little dealer logo they put on the back of the car. I had a guy at Toyota tell me those can't come off as i was actually removing it. I told him that it wasn't my first time removing unwanted advertisements.

If I bought a vehicle that had a riveted dealer emblem on it when I went to pick it up, they would be providing me a new car. You're not drilling holes in a car that I haven't even inspected yet. That's just asking for a corrosion problem later down the road.

I honestly don't think I have ever seen a dealer emblem riveted before.

I might ask for some swag but think I would be happy to help a small business out if I really liked their product.

We ordered some large rope from a place to hang the swing I made from. My wife sent them a pic after I hung it. They asked if they could use it on the website.
“ Sure! No problem “
I think they gave us 25% off our next order coupon .
that wasn’t offered up front either.

wife is redoing the cushion fabric, reason it’s like that.

That's too funny. About 10 years ago I was actually told it was a state law that it be on there so law enforcement knew if it was a local vehicle.

I ripped up the paperwork and went to another dealer

I made them peel off the two stickers they added to my used Mazda 5 after I bought it, did it during the "come back in a couple days so we can fix the stuff we hoped you wouldn't notice" wait. I refused to take delivery until they got them off.

One of my college roommates said when he bought a car, he had a prepared advertising contract he "needed" them to sign if they wanted to leave the dealer stickers on. The dealer took them off.

No, I do not think you should expect to be paid for a pic of your truck. Share it or don't but it's only worth the little bit of goodwill it will generate.

back in 07 when i bought my car, it was from a dealership that put large iridescent bubble letters spelling "BUFF WHELAN" on every car in inventory. i went in dirty and tired to look. the sales lady, Laura, could sense i was in no mood for shenanigans, gave me the keys for a test drive and that was that. I told her if i decided to buy it i'd be back the next day. No pressure, no follow up call that afternoon. So i went back with a stack of cash the next morning, got the deal about as low as it could get and then told her the dealer name had to go or else i was walking out the door. she was like "i'll call the shop now and get it taken off."

Probably the only reason i'm still driving that car is because when i went looking to buy a couple years ago, Laura had retired.

Bro, who is riveting dealer emblems on a car?

OP - send it. See if you can score a tee or sticker or something piddly. Or as others have said, maybe a small discount on accessories youve been eyeing. If not, all it took you was a minute to snap a photo and email it. You likely spent more time creating this thread.

Id be interested in seeing pics of this setup, sounds interesting, for sure!

should? yes.
will? nope.

Just to clear up some legal mumbo jumbo. That it’s your truck gets you nothing. It’s your truck, sure, but you drive it around in public all the time, if they took a picture and used it there would be almost no way for you to get anything. Your better argument is that it’s your picture. You put the energy into producing the work, you own it, and they are using it without your permission.

Back in the day, when I didn't mind tinkering, I molded some aluminum mesh and fixed it to the inside of my motorcycle fairings, covering the open holes. It gave it the appearance of a fancy filter. It was nothing but aesthetics. I posted a picture on a Honda sportbike forum I was a member of.

A few weeks later, I'm cruising Ebay and see these inserts for sale. Just buy them and glue them in. Guess whose picture was being used to show them off? Yep. Mine.

I wasn't mad, but I did email the guy and asked him not to use my picture to sell his stuff. I checked the next day and he removed it.

Buff Whelan Chevrolet, they're the Super Super dealer!
I haven't heard that name in 30 years and reading it immediately made me sing their jingle!
