Concealed carry permit...

In Buncombe co last year my father waited almost 6 months for an appointment then another 70 something for approval. Like getting a dang stamp.

I've got a renewal coming up and plan on submitting it all easy early as they will allow.

Ahh. What Sherriff was in office? I keep seeing these "Wood for Sherriff" signs, but I don't know much about him.
Heck, Im sorry, but I cant tell you who it was. Wasnt Hege lol

As for Wood, I dont know much about him, but I know my father supports him. And I'd say thats good enough for me.
My father is a big supporter of the second (many of you probably know him or have met if youre in the Triad area, especially members of PHA...), so Id vote for him when that time comes

Buncombe County renewal: Got a letter from the Sheriff advising my CHP expires in April, and it provided a link to the online renewal application. The wording of the letter made it sound like getting an appointment to submit the renewal application might be difficult, and if I couldn't get an appointment before my CHP expired I needed to call them. (Appointments can be scheduled online also)

So filled out the online form, and printed it to take, as did the wife as her CHP is also due for renewal, hoping we could get the same appointment time to make this a one trip visit, and before they expire in April.

The final step in the online application is to schedule an appointment, expecting months or weeks out. Instead, we were able to schedule the appointment two days out.

Was this for his original CHP? A good friend took 9 months from deciding he wanted his CHP till he actually had it in hand. This included waiting to get into a CC class, waiting for his appointment at the sheriff's office, and finally waiting for his CHP.

It probably would have taken him 11 months, except I told him to go ahead and schedule an appointment with the sheriff's office when he first scheduled his class, which was 2 months out. He said most in the class didn't make an appointment prior to the class.

Original permit. He already had the class.

Update:
Went to our renewal appointment. They run you through in groups, there were about 9 or 10 all there for renewals. They pickup you paperwork packet when you arrive, check it and highlight where you have to print your name or sign. Then call you back as a group, and page by page step through where to print/sign.

Hand out a page on reciprocity with other states, cover a few basics such as it will take 90 - 120 days to get the new permit, but our current CHP will be valid after it expires, but only in NC. Also can't be used for purchases after the expiration date.

We were probably in the Sheriff's office, actually the ID Department at the detention center for 10 minutes tops.

Got mine in 1976. It was a mess to get! Renewal for me the last time was 6 weeks late. The woman at SLED said,"Oh it'll be ok". I said, "What's YOUR name????"

For anyone interested in the Johnston County process, we just returned from applying.
We just walked in cold, filled out applications, signed 3 forms, paid money, got fingerprinted and out the door in 25 minutes.
She said it "could" take 90 days but probably wouldn't. We will see. Tick Tock Tick Tock hopin' for the best.

btw,
the last purchase permit I got was ready for pickup in 15 hrs from time of applying!!
Of course I don't expect that kind of turnaround this time,
but I think Sheriff Bizzell's crew has got it goin' on!!

When I got mine I dropped it off in early December, was told not to call before 90 days. I called on the 90th day and was told it was ready. When I went to pick it up the issue date was the middle of February, about 50 days after submitted. They had it sitting on a desk for 1.5 months and did not bother letting me know it was ready. Dropped off my renewal stuff Dec 21st. Was told to expect 12 weeks. This is in Chatham. Next time I see the sheriff I’m going to have to let him know this isn’t acceptable.

Wake county application process was a breeze. Waited a few minutes and then was in to get printed then out the door with a “up to 90 days” wait instruction. That was 60 days ago... still waiting. No reason it should take this long.

The concealed permits are not printed by Sheriff Dept. I recall they are printed off-site and sent to the Sheriff, that explains the earlier date on the permit.

Durham county took almost seven (7) months, and I had to resubmit part of the paper work twice. From what I understand that was not abnormal. This really upsets me, every thug in Durham is carrying, but the city/county do their best to make it very hard to obey the law.

Took 6 months for mine in forsyth back in 2013!!!

Since Im a Vet, they have to send or get crap from the VA, and they messed up a lot of peoples paperwork and had to re do the entire process so it took forever!

This is exactly what happened for me at my last renewal. Much more matter-of-fact than previous ones. Pretty much just "Required Blah, another blah-blah, sign here." They called me just under 90 days, which was just before my permit expired.

My first one in 2013 took 46 days. The wife and I applied at the same time. They told me that mine would probably take longer than hers because the VA is notoriously slow in returning the forms. However we both got the call the same day to come and pick them up, 46 days after the application.

You're lucky. I wasn't... just applied at the right time when the VA decided to screw it up.

Carteret County here. Right at 4 weeks to get mine. What they told me: if there's a bunch of CC classes at the time of your app, it can take a while. FWIW....

What's the statutory limit on foot dragging? It took exactly that. 90 days I think.
Their website says they have 45 days to "process" after receiving your background and mental health info and they won't answer inquires if it hasn't been 90 days from application. Way too long for information pulled off gov databases.

In Forsyth, my renewal back in the fall took 90 days.

Buncombe County renewal.

Just got the call today that my renewal permit was ready to be picked up, 103 days since my appointment at the sheriff's office.

The original permit only took 42 days.

That 45 day clock doesn't start running until after they receive back ALL your paperwork and then there is nothing on the books that says they have to call you to come pick up...

They called, sent e-mail, and SMS text that they were ready (wife also renewed).

They did tell us that they were taking 90 - 120 days when we did the application, and that they would contact us when we could pick them up.

They also said that our old CHP's were valid after the expiration date because we had made the renewal application. The limits were they were only good in NC, and could not be used to purchase. I have a friend who is a deputy, and he looked it up and confirmed that.

That's true about them being good for carry but not purchase.

Be interested in hearing what the date on the permit is. I got SMS/call/and maybe email from Meck...but they were all ~2-3 weeks after it was actually approved. Mine was approved before the old one expired, but I wasn't notified until afterwards.

I was told by the owner of a lgs that if you kept your receipt from paying to renew your permit that you could purchase on an expired CHP. He said it came straight from the atf agents that deal with his area. Don’t know for sure didn’t try. Took mine 108 days in person county from time of turning in renewal to phone call.

I'd say your LGS is incorrect, and like most of the time I disagree with a "legal" statement, I'll tell you why.

This topic came up sometime in the last year or two, and I'd always heard "carry but not purchase"...but never the why behind that logic. So, I asked a couple dealers on this site (or one of the others), got an answer, and then dug into it on my own to verify.

It comes down the wording of the Brady Bill, which requires the NICS checks in the first place. The bill includes exemptions for NICS for people holding certain permits. For NC, the PPP & CHP both qualify. However, the background check done for any of those permits must have been done in the previous five years. Since the NC PPP/CHP are valid for five years, when they expire, you're past your 5-year exemption window.

One of the sources I found: https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/permanent-brady-permit-chart

I was about 95 days for renewal in Buncombe .
