Post your processes and experiences, if you will.

South Carolina makes the process incredibly easy in an online renewal process that requires three things:

1. Your CWP number, located of your permit.
2. A credit/debit card for the $50 fee.
3. About two minutes of your time online.

Here is the SLED link:

https://www.sled.state.sc.us/sled/default.asp?Category=CWPR&Service=CWPR

The conditions for online renewal of your SC CWP are listed there. Basically, if nothing has changed since the last time you applied (same name, address, phone number, etc.) AND you are within 89 days of your expiration date OR have not expired more than 60 days, you are good to go with online renewal.

If you don't meet these criteria, then it has to be a paper application renewal, and an address is provided for that.

If you agree to the terms, the site takes you to another page with two fields to fill in. One is for your CWP number, the other is for your Social Security Number. (The SSN is not retained.)

Submitting that takes you to the method of payment page, where you enter your credit/debit card info for the $50 fee.

And that's it! You're done!

At some point, a new CWP card will be mailed. I'll post when it happens so we can have a time frame for this.

As an interesting side note, South Carolina actually mailed me a post card reminder to renew my CWP as soon as I was in the window to do so. Mighty nice of them, I thought!

What I found interesting in SC is they picked up my picture from my drivers licence.

I tried to renew mine once outside of the 90 days. It was on my mind at the time and I was afraid I would forget it. The site gave me the smack down and told me to come back when it was less than 90 days to expiration. I did remember and got the new CWP in about 2 weeks.

Im in NC
Last time I renewed it took a few minutes and a few bucks and a bit of a wait to get it in.
Also, I went to get mine renewed right before it expired, they said that I'd be fine carrying the 'old' one since I'd already filed for a new one, that should I get stopped it'd be fine.

Yes. That happened a few years ago when they did away with the requirement to submit photos with the paper applications.

Currently, my CWP photo doesn't march my drivers license photo because I renewed my drivers license a few months ago.

Wish NC had something like that... Mine is due in a few months. Just got the notice last week. Don't care to go down there...

What's the NC process?

Drive downtown to the sheriff's office fill out a form and give them $75. Then they mail you your permit. Not a big deal, I would just prefer to do it online...

And depending on the county, the first "appointment" available for you to drop off a piece of paper may be 90+ days from now...and then wait 3-5 months for it to come back.

As long as you've resubmitted in time, you can carry on an expired permit...just can't purchase using it.

Harnett Co NC, No picture on mine. Had to make an appointment online but they told me to come any time. I had to sign the forms in front of them and most likely, I'll have to go back to pick them up as well. I did get to meet the new Sheriff while we were there though.

I've been waiting since 11/28 so far. My original application took 12 days.

The card I got from Wake Co doesn't mention appointments. Just says to come in and pay the man his money...

Mine is due next year (in Meck Co). I was messing around on the site a couple months ago to see what the online version was like (since it was new to me) and it requires us to set up an appointment. I just checked it again to see what changed, and it gives you a warning that you'll have to pick a date and time at the end of the options. Really annoying and no reason it should take this long.

Had to do mine in Meck last year. Aside from the hassle of going uptown twice, I don't recall any issues or highlights.

It did take over 90 days for the renewal but I knew I was still good to carry despite the expiration date.

My state of birth (Indiana) now has a lifetime permit.

A 4 year permit costs $10 for the local fee and $30 for the state fee. The lifetime costs $50 for the local fee and $75 for the state.

I'll have to check with a brother to see if they ever got around to issuing an actual card instead of that flimsy 4 inch square of pink tissue paper they never used to allow you to laminate.

At least Senator Burr got the VA to stop dicking around veteran renewals. Last year the VA office in state kept bouncing the mental health records reviews for vets back to SO'S requesting forms that either didn't exist or were not required by law. Found out about this through my neighbor. He was one of many vets getting delayed by the VA.

NC, Sampson Co to be exact. Got the notice in September, went to the Sheriff office with no appointment and got the paperwork. My current CCW expires January 8th, so the earliest I could turn it in was October 8th. I turned it in, again no appointment, October 8th and got a call from the Sheriff department the next week to come pick it up.
Pretty quick work imo.

What? Paper and you can't laminate it?? Do they expect you to pay for a replacement every year?

As if laminating the oversized, non-standard format would have helped. Then it wouldn't fit in a wallet correctly.

I got my CWP when I moved to SC in 2001 and I had to submit a photo with the application but they ended up using my driver's license photo anyway. At the time, my VA permit was still valid but I was no longer a resident. I had one in VA from 1994 up until 2001.

I went ahead and set my appointment in April, just inside the 90-day window for my July expiration. Figured I'd post this tidbit of info for your entertainment:

I started out with Indiana decades ago, before Al Gore invented the internet. While I was in the Navy, renewing it was a royal PITA and I always ended up doing so after my current one had expired, planning it over two or more separate leave periods.

It used to be there was only one day a week the Lafayette police department accepted applications...and then for only an hour or so about 2 in the afternoon. Yeah...real convenient...NOT! Not a Monday or Friday, either, when you could turn it into a 3 day weekend. Not lunch time or late enough to avoid interfering with normal working hours.

Then, contrary to what the state form said (typed or hand printed) the application MUST be typed, NOT hand printed. Good luck finding typewriters in the late 90s and early 2000s. I remember taking my application to an office supply store once and completing it on one of their floor models.

Then you took the application, and whatever other required stuff, back to the police dept...on that ONE day during the week, between the hours of 2 and 3 pm...

The police department would do their "review", after which you would be notified to come BACK to the police department during that ONE day during the week between 2 and 3 pm to pick up the paperwork to mail to the State Police. It included a letter from the Lafayette PD which said they didn't believe I really Hhd any need for a concealed weapons permit because blah blah blah "training" blah blah blah "crime rates don't justify" blah blah blah.

Then I'd mail it all off to the State Police and about 2 weeks later it would show up in the mail.

So I can REALLY appreciate SC's online process!

Tell 'em you're a combat veteran and ask them where you're supposed to park your hands and feet...

Schatzman lets you come downtown for a visit. $80, sign forms in front of them, no appointment for a renewal. I was in and out on a Tuesday morning in about 20 minutes.

Screw that not laminating crap.

I've only had to renew once. Wasn't difficult. Went into the sheriff's office, talked to the desk clerk, signed some paperwork, and paid my money. I was able to pick up my new permit in a few days, and I got a change of address slip at the same time, since I was moving that same week. For what it counts, I live in Orange County, and this was under the old sheriff Pendergrass. I don't know if things are different under Blackwood.

I just filled out all my stuff online and took it down to Meck Co. They sent my notice around the 1st of December and mine expires in March. It was easy to get an appointment during the week but the weekends were full. They told me to expect a 4 month wait.

You can fill out the paperwork and pay online. Still have to print the form out and go to the sheriff's office.

Did not know that. Thanks! Seems silly that you can't just renew online, but it's something...

EDIT: wait... so I have to get an appointment, go down and be fingerprinted again, and they charge a CC fee and a convenience fee totaling $6.59 for the online form? That's BS. You can fill it out at the sheriff's office and pay cash. Gotta go there anyhow...

I assume the renewal period begins with the expiration of the old card? I.e., you get a full 5 years after expiration of your old card, even if you renew 2-3 months before expiration?

I just filled mine out online. Picked my appointment. But I chose Pay Cash and paid nothing online. Just have to take $75 cash when I go. Can't remember if I did prints at my last renewal or not.

I renewed mine in Durham last year. Their web site says you should have an appointment, but when I called they said just come on in before 4:00. Walk in, fill out the paperwork, give 'em money, new permit comes in the mail in about 3 weeks. Sheriffs were downright friendly, too.

Reading the card I got... It says you only have to schedule an appointment if you do it online, otherwise just come in during the proper hours...

I guess I t's possible I could do that in Meck...dunno?

Either way, mine expires the 17th of one month, and I scheduled 8:30am on the 21st three months before that (since it can't be more than 90 days out). Plus, this way I already have the forms filled out and printed...just have to sign them I front of somebody when info to the office.

Still waiting on mine in Forsyth County. Applied back on 10/18, asked about it a week or so ago and got a "it can take up to 60 days, now leave us alone" email back. Holding a man back.

"And December 17th was day 60, let's get with the program, folks! Tick-tock, tick-tock, the clock is running!" (Works best if you make eye contact while aggressively tapping your wrist watch.)
