Concealed carry renewal experiences

There used to be a thread about CHP renewals but i could not find it. After hearing some horror stories and witnessing WakeCo sherriff dept bureaucracy several times B4, i was pleasantly surprised to get my CHP renewal in 60 days. Cant say enuff about the deluxe, suitable for framing permit that was almost bent in half after going thru the USPS from dwntwn Raleigh to my hse in the burbs. The hoops they make honest, tax paying, god fearing people jump thru to be able to legally do something the constitution guarantees.

Filled out the forms online, and printed them out. Paid with CC online. Scheduled an appointment online, first available was only 2 days away.
Went to appointment, turned in all the forms I printed at home. They called us in a group of 10 or so. Handed our papers back to us, where they had highlighted every place we needed to sign, and page by page explain where to sign or initial. Spent a few minutes explaining the law, our status if our current CHP expired before we got the new one. (valid for carry but only in NC, and could not be used for purchase). Total time at sheriff's office, 10 - 15 minutes.

Took just over 100 days before we (wife also renewed at same time) got an email that our permits were ready to be picked up at the Sheriff's office.

Had mine since 1976. Number is 00014XX. They are over 400,000 now and climbing. Online here is the way to go. Actually had some interaction with SLED the last time. It's a crap shoot as to who answers the phone for success. My wife holds in S.C. and Utah. If I remember correctly she is good for 43 states. She is the traveler of the family.

My wife and I went down to the Sheriffs Office in Bladen this past Wednesday. I received the renewal forms on April 17. Our permits expire June 2nd. We were told that we had to have the forms submitted 30 days before they expire. They gave us roughly 41 days. We filled out the renewal forms and paid them $150 cash. We'll see what happens.
Update: We both had our permits in hand within 34 days of submitting the applications.

I am in Henderson County NC. I am currently 3 months after my renewal appt. And still nothing. My chp expired in May. I started calling after 8 weeks asking if there was a problem every time they always say it's "just waiting on paperwork" Anybody have any ideas that may help???

What I do not understand is why the NC permit has your address on it, which gives them more money every time you move. I would prefer one that says "NC" and be done, like the FL one. Also, you can renew the FL one at their DMVs; don't know if you can do it online but I would expect since you do the same with drivers licenses there.

Your 'expired' CHP is still valid for carry, but only in NC. The system will show your renewal in progress. It is also not valid for purchase.

Buncombe took 104 days for my renewal.

Chatham Co, NC renewal- The sheriff mailed a reminder, with renewal forms months before the expiration. That was great.
Filled out the form, went to the dept & paid, no prints, they told me it'll take 12 weeks for me to receive it. I asked why Harnett Co only took 5 working days to get my first permit, yet they need 12 weeks. It was to make sure I'm not nuts, I replied "just don't talk to my wife."

Seems mine took more than 45-60 days which was longer than the initial time period.

I was not happy.

So, good and bad in Durham County. I received the notification on 02-JUL that my permit was ready to be picked up. I went today at 11:20 (follow up email says they are open from 0830 to 1630). The window had a sign that said they were closed 11-12. A different clerk told me that someone was retiring and they were having a lunch. OK, I've done that before too, so I decide to wait since parking is $2 for the first hour and I don't want to leave and come back.

Looking at the permit, they got my zip code wrong. This had happened on my previous permit but by the time I noticed it they told me I would have to pay for the correction so I let it slide, but this time I knew what to look for. She made the correction in the system and told me:
1) Permits are only printed on Wednesdays so mine will be 11-JUL.
2) They will receive it sometime during the week of 16-JUL.
3) They will laminate it for free since it was their screw up (aka I did the paperwork correctly).

I'm traveling for work that week so it looks like the 24th will be my earliest chance to pick it up. This really makes me suspect that the application process is BS and that they just reprinted my old permit with a new expiration date. They likely stretch out the process to see if I get nailed for anything that would disqualify me after I've submitted the payment.

Typical government. No incentive to improve.

Forsyth County: I downloaded the application, filled it out, booked an appointment for a couple of days later. When I went into the SO office, I was early, but they took care of me immediately, having me sign and notarizing the form. I was completely finished in 10 minutes after arriving. Thirty-two days later I got an automated call that my renewed permit was ready for pick-up, any time except Wednesday mornings.

No complaints here!

Just got the email saying my chp renewal is ready. 96 days exactly... next time I am going to make sure my appt. Is at the 90 day window. I missed a few good deals on pistols because I didnt have a permit or valid chp for 2 months #frownyfaceemoji

Not read the whole thread, but wanted to say that Friday I went to renew mine in Davidson Co, NC
75 bucks
There is now a new application I had to fill out. Took about five minutes, just basic stuff like if youre a citizen, had a felony etc
I was told they'd call in about 30 days or so with my permit, we shall see.

Applied for renewal on July 20. I'll update when I get the call back.

So to update - I applied on 7-20, I was called on 8-3 that it was ready to be picked up.
So 2 week turnaround here in Davidson County

Saw my wife was getting mail from MCSO today, and figured maybe it was her renewal reminder. Checked her permit and it expires in Jan '19.

Went to the website to book an appointment, and was a little surprised that the first available appointments are Tue 9/18. When I did mine last year I thought it was 60+ days out. Set her up for 10/11 since school is out that day. She's a sub teacher and doesn't like to turn down work.

I also thought I went past a screen that said she couldn't carry concealed until a permit was approved...but maybe that was only intended for new applicants. The site wasn't set up for mobile use very well, and I was doing it from my iPhone. I'm assuming but it still holds true that she can carry but not purchase on the expired permit. Truth is it doesn't matter, as long as she doesn't have to take the class again. She's never carried or bought a gun...we just keep her a permit so we don't worry about a pistol left in a vehicle or if I need to drop one in her bag for any reason. $75 for a 5-year "insurance policy" isn't that bad.

That'll give them 90 days before hers expires, so we'll see how it goes.

Has anybody here had a renewal approved in the last month or two in Meck?

I ask because mine was last year and it was two trips to the MCSO, one to pay & apply...then one to pick up, sign, have card laminated.

Saw somebody on ARF just post in Wake that his wife's approved renewal came in the mail. Wondered if Meck had moved to that method since my wife is renewing in two weeks.

Took the wife down to MCSO yesterday. Had a 10am appointment. Papers all filled out and cash in hand. Dropped her off around 9:20a, and she was back outside by 9:30a. <10 minutes to get through security, handle the renewal payment and signatures, and back out.

We'll see how long it takes. Expiration is ~1/10/19 IIRC.

Even if she does not get her renewal before the current permit expires, it will be considered valid for carry in NC only as the system will show she has submitted for renewal.

Limitations: It will not be valid for carry outside of NC
Cannot be used for purchase of firearms.

Aware of all that.

Doesn't really matter...as she's made it the first 4.75 years without carrying once. :D

I use it as an insurance policy in case I want to leave one in a vehicle or need to drop it in her bag.

When I did mine last year, it was approved a couple days before mine expired...but they didn't call me for a couple weeks.

Filled out and printed the renewal paperwork before I went, got to the Wake office 10 minutes before my appointment time and there were 2 people in line. Waited, and while waiting the 2nd window opened so my total line time was under 3 minutes. Signed/dated the forms, addressed the envelope they'll use to sent it do me (brought my own SASE but they said they wouldn't use it, something about them having a postal meter so they didn't need my stamp), and that was about it. Under 10 minutes in the office. Parking in the local garage was $1.

Worst part about it was driving downtown and burning 2+ hours of my day. I really really hate going downtown. Reminds me of SFO, a place I would rather forget.

There's going to be a new sheriff in Mecklenburg. It should be interesting to see how the process goes after he's sworn in, not sure when that is. He's virtually guaranteed to win It's my understanding he's anti 2A in general and definitely doesn't like the CHP.

I'm fairly certain he's guaranteed...since his was the only name on the ballot today. Doesn't mean I voted for him, though!!

I received a card in the mail from the Sheriff's Office telling me my CHP would be expiring soon. It actually expires in March 2019. So I went online and filled out the form. The only part I had a hard time filling in was past address. It's amazing how you draw a blank about how long you lived at a location. Other then that the earliest appointment was 12/28 so I took it and printed out the package they want you to bring with you. I also made a note not to forget my DD 214 that they ask for even though I gave them one on my original application. The whole thing cost me $83.59 with the fees they tacked on. So let's see how it goes after I go on the 28th.

I know it varies from county to county here in NC but I just renewed mine and it couldn't have been much easier. Application for renewal was filled out online and you pay the fees for your God given rights there as well. After that I had to visit the Sheriff's office to fill in a couple of blanks and then they notarize it. Then you wait. I waited between 4 and 5 weeks from the time I left the Sheriff's office until I was notified that I had been approved and I could pick it up.

I'm in Lincoln county and the Sheriff here is conservative and pro gun so I know that helps. I know Iredell county is the same way as I renewed there once as well.

NH - Download form, fill it out and sign, deliver to local PD. Wait 10 days. Non-PP = automatic issuance. I've had them delivered to my door several times. $10 for 5 years. From experience of 5-6 renewals, the entire process is 5-11 days from application delivery to license in hand.

SC - Find a course, wait for course. Spent $75 & 10-1/2 hours I will never get back. Take shooting test that Stevie Wonder could pass. Get fingerprints and send application to SLED with another $50. Wait 90 days or however long it takes them to feel like getting around to it. Entire process, $125 and almost six months. Knowing they are here to protect me, priceless.

BTW, the reason for the useless hurdles and extensive wait is only to remind you that they do not consider themselves our servants. They think they are our masters.

FWIW, I moved here at the very beginning of August, took my class at the end of August and had my CWP by mid October. Coming from NJ it was a very pleasant experience. :)

Went down with my forms for my renewal. You have to go through a metal detector with two Sheriff's officers standing there. The new office I must say was pretty efficient I was in and out in 15 minutes. It's much easier then the old office because you can park on Trade street and walk down to the building. After signing the paperwork she told me it will be three months and I'll get a phone call when it's ready. So lets see.

Problems in Orange County or more specifically, Duke Hospital. I turned in my renewal on 12 Oct 18. Have called several times to check on it. Last time, about a week ago, the woman I spoke with said they still had not heard back from Duke on September requests. I guess Duke has decided to stop concealed carry permits at least in Orange County. I thought that there was some statue that said the sheriff had so many days to check on you but then he had to issue. I've searched and searched but can't find anything to this effect.

My last renewal with Brunswick county I started the paperwork when I was in Iraq. Emailed them my application and payment. Glitch was I was only home for 12 days before leaving for the company in North Dakota. When my new permit came in they wouldn't mail it to me as I had to physically sign it on the back, then they place their seal on it and laminate it. Came home for Christmas for 2 days but they were closed. So, I'm working with local/state and federal law enforcement there daily. Our sheriffs office said to continue to carry as they had my valid permit and if any questions call them. Talked to the sheriffs there and no issue. Was back home 6 months later and picked it up. Life of a traveler/contractor.

Wonder how things are going at WakeCo. sheriff's dept now that Big Donnie is gone and Gerald Baker is in charge. Big Donnie was no friend of the 2A but this guy is a true enemy of it. Glad I got my little ragged piece of paper renewed last year. I went straight to Office Depot and got it laminated. Its as if they wanted you to lose it or otherwise accidentally destroy it...

Filed 10/11/18, she got a text on 1/14/19 to say it was ready for pickup. Don’t know when it was approved...but I think she’s going Friday to pick it up.

Expiration on the new one is 1/7/24, so it looks like it was approved a week before they finally called. I think mine was even longer than that last year.

In both instances ours just happened to expire in the time between approval and notification. But hers was handled about a month faster than mine IIRC.

That also happened on my original application 5 years ago. The permit was dated a week before I got it. They never even called me. I was there picking up a PPP because I wanted to buy a certain gun and just asked the lady about my CHP. She went into the back and came out with a folder and there it was. So they had it but no one was calling. The worst kick in the butt was I had already paid for the PPP. :(

Did you get this sorted out?
