My oldest has asked for a Cowboy pistol for Christmas. He doesn't hunt much but he likes to shoot. This is something that we can do together. My question is, are the Rough Riders worth the money, or should I go on up to the Ruger? I have a Chiappa rifle that seems to be a good rifle and I see that they have a 1873 style pistol. Does anyone have an opinion on them? Just looking some advice to give to Santa.
Thanks,

The Heritage revolvers are a good entertainment value.

I have a Ruger; nice little revolver:

The Rough Rider is pot metal, I never felt "good" about having one but they function as they should.

My big problem with the .22's in general is that they are scaled down copies of the originals and my finger barely fits in the trigger guard.

The Rough Rider is worth it unless you're a gun snob. It comes with two cylinders, it goes bang and it shoots straight, so you will get your money's worth. But if you're like me and every time you pick it up you think "man a Ruger would be so much nicer" then it won't see much range time.

Before I sold mine, I was tempted to put some honest range and holster wear on it. But I kept it too nice for that. Now I want another in 'shooter grade' just for that..

I walked into one of my haunts one day and a Ruger single six was in the case. No box no 22mag cylinder. $250. OUT the door it went. With me.[emoji41]

I bought one with just the .22 LR cylinder for under $120 at a Dixie show. You pretty much cannot go wrong at that price point.

The Ruger Single Six is the top choice. The Bearcats are neat little kit guns but the Single Six is a better shooter.

Avoid the Chiappa “Plinkerton”.

Uberti and Pietta offer full sized single actions in .22 caliber. My local Cabelas always has them. Might be worth a look.

The Heritage revolvers Show up on sale at very attractive prices, so shop around. They seem to be decent shooters for the price.

Find you a nice H&R 949 and you'll never look at another Heritage, or need another Ruger 22 wheelgun. I love mine. 9rds Single or (stiff) DA all in a nice 'merican made package.
