Coyotes

Shot one in my yard a few years back, about 10AM on a Sunday morning. He just stood looking over his shoulder at about 40 yards until I shot him
Blew the top of his head off, then I tied a rope around his back feet and drug his body with the bloody head flopping on the ground all around the perimeter of my five acres. Then I took him to the farthest place on my property from my house and strung him up in a tree by the back legs with his head about 10' off the ground.
I hear them in the far distance form time to time, but have not seen another one in my yard since.
I hope they got the message.

Their relatively close, as close as Virginia we do have red wolves here in Stanly and Montgomery counties.

Green works better on clear nights red is good with fog or mist or no moon light.

Just purchased the light recommended. What Scopes are you all using?

Going on a ar15 300blk SBR 7.5inch. It currently has an ACOG on it.

Can you hit a 5" diameter circle at your chosen yardage with your ACOG? If so, you are good to go on optics.

Yes but see below

I love how the budget grows when toothy critters threaten Momma's animals. You should take advantage of this while you can. You probably need a whole new rifle too. :D

This is true. She said whatever you need get it and make it dedicated.

The only way to control coyotes is long term trapping. Coyotes are mostly solitary animals (not like wolves, which form packs with a well defined hierarchy) that mark and defend their territories. When someone says they see packs of coyotes they actually see family groups (the pups will disperse in the fall leaving the original mated pair, or even just one adult in that territory). This is the conundrum. If you trap or shoot out the local animals, you create a vacuum for dispersing coyotes to fill. In areas with these low densities, coyote litter sizes increase significantly, so unless you continue an intensive trapping regime you may actually end up with more coyotes than when you started.

There was an interesting study a few years back that attempted to create a survey method to determine a relative abundance of animals in a given area. What they basically did was put a select number of coyotes in a pen and then used observers at a remote location to determine how many coyotes they thought they heard. The results were surprising. Observers would listen and state that there were 3 to 5 coyotes calling when in actuality there was only one. The animal would howl, yelp, and bark with such a wide variety of sounds that it sounded like an entire pack. When they had multiple animals calling the observers could not determine the number of animals. So, using calling to determine relative abundance does not work. I have several coyotes in and around my house and I listen to them all of the time. What I originally thought was numerous "packs" howling was actually only a handful of animals in the area.

This right here. I do a fair amount of coyote hunting in and around Chatham county. Within one mile of our farm we killed at least 11 yotes last year. That is just in one spot. Les Johnson cites a study in one of his videos that basically says that if you were to be able to kill 70% of the coyotes in an area, within the next year there would be more born than were alive the previous year.

I would think a strong defense would be your best bet in addition to a very aggressive trapping program. You will never be able to hunt them out of an area.

I just want to thin them down. Trapping I worry about trapping other things. I also need to give the Mrs a peace of mind for the bold ones that decide to show up during the day.

We have two mini mules and one mustang but that's in the pasture. This was about 10 ft from our pool in the backyard. I can't really limit their food source as we have a non profit animal rescue at the house.
The mule might help. My neighbor and I (rural Chatham County) were discussing the coyote problem as they're abundant on the property. She was saying that donkeys are very protective, especially against dog and coyotes which they will attack and kill.

The mules are fenced in. The coyote was in the open.

The best time to trap coyotes out of your area is just prior to the fawning season. You remove the local yotes and the void fillers don’t show up until the fawns have had a chance to grow.

Stupid thing is, NC only has a yote trapping season in the winter.
They are so up their own butt about their precious foxes that they limit everything else, thus insuring the coyotes get a chance to kill all the reds they want.

That'd be a blast... IF the base model didn't start out at $7,500.

The wife said to get whatever he needs. :p

About the same $$ as a custom high end 1911. Just with a little more distance shooting ability. If I ever win a lottery jackpot I am buying 2!

I was quite interested UNTIL I heard the price.
Make a .224 BOZ- a 10mm necked down to a .223 bullet, loading dies and a barrel swap is all that's needed.

Maybe we can get about 10 local guys to all pitch in. We'll each have it about 6 weeks a year.

So I tried sighting in an ACOG I had in the safe. I couldn't get it dialed in so I'm taking another gun out tonight.

300 blk SBR. I'm not sure it I was me or the can. I should have started without the can.

EVERYONE knows ACOG's are unreliable, you should just give it to me.
Nice double stamper, I took my 300BLK yesterday as well. Thought I'd see what a Hornady 125g SST mushroom looks like when shot into water. It was a trick retrieving the pieces off the pool bottom without her knowing I did a ballistics test in the new pool. :D I got 119 of the 125g picked up.

Can you swing a thermal scope? Guy from work has been REAL lucky with his. Gets one or two a week over baited fields. I got the entry level Pulsar and have taken three with mine.

City coyotes are way braver than country coyotes. When I work in town and see them cross the street in broad daylight...pretty ballsy.
You don't see any of that where I live. The yotes here do not like people or anything people and do their best to stay away from you. Hard as hell getting a shot at one of them. I think a big part of that is everyone has dogs and they'll at the minimum bark like hell when critters show up. Shy coyotes hate barking dogs. They also hate the billion candle-power flashlight. They'll be out there at the edge of the woods at 1am in the morning yipping and yapping, and as soon as I shine that light out there they shut up. Them dadgum yellow eyes staring back at me. Yeah I could go all predator and mow down the woods right there with a 40 rd pmag and might get one. But I don't shoot what I can't see. Gawd. What if that was somebody's dog.

And @amnesia ...let me take my deepest Japanese bow in your direction sir. Dog pounds..animal shelters..places like that, I can't go to. I'm a marshmallow. After about 3 minutes the first thing outta my mouth would be I'll take all of them. So I applaud you and thank you for your efforts with the animal rescue. Just goes to show there are still good people in this world.
