Thinking about picking up a crossbow. I have a small piece of land that a firearm is not an option to deer hunt. Houses are within 100 yards and with an HOA I don’t think it would fly. Property backs up to some farm land so thinking about putting a stand at the rear of my property with a corn barrel. Nothing in the HOA says no hunting, just generic do not bother your neighbors language. Hence no firearm.

That being said I’m thinking a crossbow would allow me to do more hunting than I normally have time for. I normally have to drive 25 minutes to my parents place or a buddy’s large parcel an hour away.

What crossbow do you recommend? I’m seeking quite a few in the 400-$500 range that from reviews look like they would work great.

I’m interest in the recommendations also, started looking a little bit tonight. My main spot doesn’t have any good trees to put a stand so we put up a nice tripod. It’s great for rifle season but the rails make drawing a bow extremely difficult.

I grabbed a Centerpoint Patriot that has been flawless and very accurate so far. Very happy with it compared to a couple Barnetts ive had.

I've been thinking about making the switch as well.

I had an Excalibur Axiom and really liked it but have found a compound to be more conducive to hunting. Crossbows tend to be loud and deer will either jump or squat at the sound, so you will have some misses or spine hits. Compounds are much quieter and less likely to cause the same behavior. Modern compounds are quick to pick up on, so you could be hunting with one in a couple weeks

Thanks for the replies guys. Was in Walmart getting a few things and decided to pickup up a Barnett Whitetail Hunter STR. Looks pretty decent overall. Went to sight the scope in and first bolt went right above the target block into the wood line behind it. Looked for ten minutes and couldn’t find it. Second shot on target. Wife wanted to go to dinner so had to stop for the evening.

Two questions, can I use 20” bolts with this? It came with 22”s and from what I’ve read Barnett does 22”s exclusively. Walmart only sold the 20”s.

It only came with two bolts so as of now I’m down to one. Need to do some googling and place an order tonight.

Another thing, dang bolts are expensive! I’m used to buying ammo... a couple dozen of these on hand seem pricey

Ha! Archery gets crazy expensive too. Dropped 4 bills into my compound getting everything upgraded and tuned. Went home and shot a $20 gold tip into the stratosphere.

FYI, Barnett Crossbows are known as the best mid-range x-bows where the Jackal is the best uner $400 and the Whitetail Hunter is the best under $500

My Whitetail Hunter nailing shots at 80+ yards bottom reticle dot no problem! I would suggest some additional bipods. I really don't have any complaints. Maybe a longer adjustable butt stock, and safety is hard to reach without taking hand off pistol grip. As for accuracy and power it's perfect.

By the way, I have never seen good bolts that come with an X-bow from the box. Accessories are commonly cheap junk that must be replaced.

I picked up a Centerpoint Sniper 370 as my first Xbow a few years ago ; It was a great deal at the time, and certainly good for a "starter" bow. It was quiet, accurate out to reasonable hunting distances ( they just don't carry any energy out beyond 40- 50 yards, no matter what the speed is) ; and was pretty comfortable and reasonably easy to cock.

For ME, I couldn't tell the difference between it and bows that were a few hundred bucks more. Actually, I just upgraded it this year to a Tenpoint Siege; because I hadn't spent my toy money in a year .. and I'm very picky about triggers. Most X bow triggers are sub optimal. The Centerpoint is supposed to be one of the "good" ones in the "starter bow" price class.... but if that's true, I'd hate to feel a bad one. :) It killed two deer in 2 seasons, so I can't complain too much.

FYI - I have (had) that Centerpoint for sale here .. and would still cut someone a pretty good deal. I'll be out of town this weekend starting in about an hour.. but if you're interested PM me and we'll talk next week. Id link to that thread if I knew how..

I think I want to get a crossbow to get into the early deer season again in the mountains. After shoulder surgery, I can't pull my compound bow any more.

I currently know nothing about them, so I need to start learning.

@Puddlejockey, pm sent.

Got myself an Excalibur 340 TD last month. Love it so far but haven't hunted with it yet. Seems very accurate!

Wow a blast from the past. Have been using that STR now for two years with good luck.
