Recently, my dad has been helping his sister clean out her house. To say she is a hoarder would be putting it nicely. She hasn’t thrown anything away since the 1980s. She’s been like that for awhile, always refusing family offers to help clean out the house until recently. Sad part is she is only doing it now cause the daughter she took care of her whole life due to physical/mental disabilities has passed away. She went to look for some paperwork, couldn’t find it and at that point realized she needed help. My father and his two brothers agreed to help out and pitched in and got a dumpster. They’ve been working for days getting stuff cleaned out of the house. On the plus side, a lot of it inside the house is stuff brand new in the bags.

They knew she had a few guns inside the house because her late husband used to hunt with them. They were expecting to find a few older shotguns and 22 rifles, which they did.

Probably the worse is this 870. It was my late uncles main hunting shotgun for awhile according to my dad. They hadn’t seen it in years, and it’s probably the worse out of everything.

My dad asked me what he should do in attempt to try to clean it up. I told him first to heavily disinfect it, since we have no clue what was in that house. After that, to spray it heavily with ballistol and let it sit overnight. Come back next day with some paper towels and just wipe it off to start.

Im trying to talk my dad into doing an electroylsis tank, since that would be the best method to remove the majority of it in my mind. We had one at the house I had built but think it got tossed.

It looks like the barrel has been cut, since it looks uneven.

Once he has the majority of the thick rust off, take some 0000 steel wool soaked in oil and start slowing going over the whole thing to try to get the rest off.

End goal is to at least try to get it cleaned off and maybe serviceable. My aunt doesn’t yet know what she’ll do with them, my dad may end up with it as payment for all his help. But for time being, just not trying to drop a lot of money into it.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

If my dad ends up with it, I’m planning on taking it to a local guy to get more of a professional rust removal and then having it cerakoted black.

It is probably still functional, but I would either disassemble it and media blast all the parts, then Duracoat, or send it to a gunsmith to make sure nothing really important has rusted out of spec, you don't want to end up like Daffy Duck....

My first question is, how does it look inside? It may be better then it looks, it may be worse. Sure the outside is rough but its not a lost cause.

As stated above, it could very well be functional.
As far as what to do with it, how trashed is the wood?

If it is not in bad shape, perhaps you could keep the furniture... you cant beat "free" vs paying for synthetic furniture. Black cerkote and wood isnt a bad look.

0000 steel wool, Kroil, a couple hours of sweat and then present it to the family member that hunts the most.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

If I hadn’t already mentioned, it’s a 20 gauge

As it stands now, probably just going to go with the steel wool and penny treatment just because it’s not technically our shotgun to do a lot to. My dad may decide to go with electrolysis tank as well, and I’ve offered to give him a reblue kit I have sitting around.

He did advise they were able to work the action cause they checked it to make sure it wasn’t loaded

My aunt ended up giving all her brothers a gun of their choose from the selection she had, but she wanted to keep this one since it was the one her husband used the most.

My dad is going to work on cleaning it up for her, and I’ll probably help as time allows between my wife being pregnant and upcoming move. He’s going to measure the barrel and makes sure is legal length and we may end up taking it to a gunsmith to cleanup the cut and put a front bead back on it. Though I may end up just ordering a Truglo fiber optic front sight as cheap alternative for time being.

Just for peace of mind, I’ll probably pony up and order her a new magazine tube spring.

My dad is going to talk to her sister some more about how much money she wants to spend on the project. My dad said he’d probably pay for cerakote/pakerizing and the other stuff so long as she agrees after passing that he gets the shotgun back since he was close to that brother in law.

According to my dad, the wood isn’t in bad shape surprisingly just dirty.

He is hopefully going to start working on it later this week, he’s still been helping over at my aunts house trying to get stuff squared away. Plus he and my mom just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary, so he’s going to take his time on this one.

Ive sent him a bunch of pictures of how to dissemble the 870 and different methods of cleaning it up. He’s suppose to take pictures of it again once he starts the project so I can update everything. Though he did mention getting it to me and letting me do it, but I don’t know yet.

Yeah, I’ve been considering trying to talk them into media blasting it, but then we’d have to buy one and then take it to be cerakoted. Plus, my aunt is wanting it back sooner than later which is odd cause she didn’t know where it even was for going on 20 years.

guess since she can finally see stuff around the house she wants to know where it is

My dad sent me some more pictures today. He finally got a chance to work on it the other day.

Had previously taken it apart completely, then just sprayed it down thoroughly and wiped it off a few times.

Majority of the rust is coming off without issues, though there is putting as one would imagine.

I chipped in and bought a new magazine tube spring and follower for it off the EE.

My dad is still workin on the receiver currently, plans on test firing before giving it back to his sister

Final update:

My dad got the vast majority of the surface rust off just by spraying it down thoroughly, letting it sit for awhile, and then use 0000 wool to get it off. Does have some pitting but looks a lot better than it did.

Once everything was cleaned up, my dad put it back together but it wouldn’t pump correctly. He was already taking it to a local gunsmith to have him clean up the barrel cut and put a front sight bead back on it. Ended up the magazine tube had somehow got misaligned (maybe from when he cut the barrel and whatever he was using to hold it while he cut).

Gunsmith cleaned up the barrel cut (its currently 22”), drilled and tapped for bead sights, realigned the magazine tube, installed new magazine follower and spring, and function tested all for $100. Feel like I’m forgetting something else he did to it as well.

My aunt has it back now, she’s happy.
