When cutting foam for a rifle case (pelican), which way do you prefer to orientate the rifle. Muzzle to your left or right when opening the lid? Or doesn't matter, just whatever works?

I have both and curious if there is a preference to one or the other.

Earlier this year I was new to the prs game. It was recommended to have the muzzle towards the wheel end of the pelican 1750. This way you can roll wheels to a safe direction and always know where the muzzle is. Once I started shooting matches my case stays in truck so it doesn’t matter for what I’m doing. I think it just boils down to personal preference

I can see that in theory, but until you shoot a prs match, you learn (like you did) you uncase on the tailgate of your truck, trunk, etc. and sling your gear down to the line.
I do like that idea though of the muzzle down / away from you when rolling.

I typically have mine muzzle left, but one is muzzle right.
I think I do it because it's natural for me to grab grip with my right hand
And that's what I always defaulted to. Which hand do I reach in and grab it with. And what will the natural movement be to take it out.

On single rifle cases, I put the muzzle to the left, because I always uncase and recase the rifle from the left side of the bench/position. That ensures that the muzzle is always pointing downrange while I am taking it out or putting it back into the case.

I like the idea of orienting the muzzle towards the wheels on larger cases I will have to borrow that idea. Honestly, I got so tired of cutting foam for new setups I just started putting guns in rectangular soft cases that fit my various cases/guns and then add foam if I need it for different configurations.

Every drag bag I've ever had has the muzzle towards the forward drag handle. That's likely why mine faces the top handle (away from the wheels). Handle points down range makes it easy to remember.

The other point I've heard people make is where most of the weight is, (action, stock, etc) being closer to the wheels or away from the handle opposite the wheels which would make rolling easier.

This however puts the muzzle towards you when in tow.

Y'all have any tips or tricks to cutting the foam? It's been a to do list of mine and just haven't gotten around to it yet

Buy a bulk package of razor blades and change blades as soon as there is a hint of pulling versus cutting. You will go through a couple dozen lot of blades.

I haven't done it in many years, though. A pack of these might make life easier.

But don't use the cheap dollar store type.

Thanks I'll give that a shot.

I would always make it so the optics were “up” as in closest to me, that way the weapon is not letting gravity push on the optic

That's the important thought to me also. I do not keep one in the chamber of the one in my truck box so all I have to do is hit the charging handle and I am ready for business anyway. The weight is on the magazine end of the pistol.

I bought a $16 electric knife at Wal-Mart that worked great!

Post a link to the type of electric knife you used.

Are you meaning an electric knife like the one you whip out on Thanksgiving.

This is exactly what I used to cut the foam in a Pelican Vault 700 case. If you start slow and don't make the cuts way oversized your objects will remain in place. The case has become our on-the-road survival kit sorta. I keep an AR Pistol w/7.5" barrel and and an OLight. 4 full Pmags, a quality hand flashlight, Spyderco pocketknife, Sig 229 w/3 18 round magazines.
