Didn’t see a thread in this so figured I would start one. Who is into cycling here and what are ya riding? I have a Specialized Hybrid myself as most of my riding is on a paved bike path. I got into it when we moved up here to Northern VA, since we have a very nice path called the Washington & Old Dominion about .5mi from my house. It is a completely paved path that’s goes from Purceville, VA to Arlington and is about 45mi’s one way.

I like to hop on it on the weekends and ride to a brewery for a couple beers and some lunch and there are a ton of them just off the path. Last weekend a buddy and I got on the path with no real destination in mind and ended up riding all the way to DC and back, about 67mi round trip.

A friend and I are planning a trip in September to take a 5 day break from work and do the entire GAP and C&O canal. It’s about a 340mi total trip that starts in Pittsburgh and ends in DC.

I do but havent been able to since February due to my hand injury.

I'm signed up for the Raven Rock Ramble and the 5-0 ride thats coming up....I got some training to do as soon as doc lets me.

I’ve got Specialized cross tour last year. I’ve been riding it some at the house and out on our rails to trails. 5 or so miles around the pastures at home and 15 or so on the rails. I want to get out more this year. My weight is down a good bit and I’d like to get more active with biking and running.

I can't get down with the full on Lance Armstrong types, but I love my hybrid. Just got it back from the shop after the alligator accident bent the front rim... Looking forward to some nice weather to get back on it...

I got a Canondale mountain bike that just sees road use.
I need to use it more, but I do like to cycle as an exercise.

And have a stationary bike in the living room to work out during tv time

Looking at getting a new bike soon and I want something more like a gravel bike that would be good for bike packing and do pretty well on pavement too. Right now I think I’m between a Specialized Diverge Comp E5 and a Cannondale Topstone 105. Anyone have any experience with either of those, or have any other recommendations I should take a look at?

So I got a mountain bike back in September , COOP 1.1, probably the best purchase I've made all year. I've had a blast riding it around the reservoir trails here.

Ok, so Im going to ask some, possibly, dumb questions when it comes to bike racks.

Ive got an idea, I want to be able to mount one or two bikes to my MR2. My idea is to get a rough conditioned trunk, no spoiler, and put some of the 'tracks' on it for bike wheels go into.
First - where would I go to find some cheap tracks for the wheels to go in.
Second - what else would be needed to secure the bike? Like, what normally happens on a roof rack bike setup?

Maybe the idea is terrible, but I figure it's only four bolts and I could install some studs into the holes so then it'll be easier to get mounted on the two brackets and then put on some nuts.
I can get a trunk for about 60 bucks

I dont know, a thought.

Wiped out pretty hard on blue heron, the big dip heading west. Nothing broke so I'm going to keep trying till either something does or I clean it.

Glad you are ok. Have a few friends who have broke things on wild turkey.

Many years ago I had a DeRosa frame (Columbus SL days) with a Campagnolo Super Record (red) gruppo. Nowadays, I'd probably get winded just getting on board the thing!

Would I could extra extra extra like this post. Love DeRosa’s and other Italian steel bikes, and Campy as well, of course.

I had a Guerciotti with a Columbus SL frame.

Another fine choice. I used to ride the Assault On Mt. Mitchell. Last time was on a Mondonico with EL/OS tube and a Campy Chorus group.
My favorite, which I could never afford would be a Colnago Master Light.
I now ride an older Specialized M4 rigid MTB when out with my teens.

I've done wild turkey once so far, it was pretty rough. I need to get one more pass in on it before the weather gets real cold.

I really would like to try out a full sus steel frame, I've been watching videos about the cotic FlareMAX. Full steel frame that comes in at about 31 pounds complete.

What's a good mountain bike to buy in the $500 price range?
You might be able to find a decent used hard tail on Craigslist for that. Might have a bunch of scuffs but as long as everything else (frame, front suspensio, wheels, shifting) is good so what.
you will struggle to get even a decent full suspension at that price though.

It depends. While that’s a limited price point, what are your plans as far as riding? Are you looking at just riding around the neighborhood, looking to hit the local trails or something else?

There are deals to be found but knowing the kind of riding you plan on doing helps to narrow the search.

Local trail riding (old RR track converted into a walking/cycling trail) and around the neighborhood.

A Trek Marlin 5 is a “touch” more than $500 but plenty capable for what you’re looking to do. My daughter is a pretty capable trail rider and this is what she’s currently riding. It also has a modern size wheel (27.5) which is nice plus IMO.It’s enough bike to take on the local trails to see if this is something that you really want to get into. Giant likely has similar options (I’ve had good experiences with their bikes).

I also wouldn’t shy away from a bike that is a little bit older with a 26” wheel set. Just because “the bike industry” changed things up in regards to wheel size doesn’t make them magically unridable. For what I had into my last bike, I practically gave it away when I sold it…..and that may work to your advantage.

Feel free to PM me if you like.

@Derek8404 -
Good to see you wearing the helmet. My bike looked like yours, in gray, until I somersaulted off it and landed on the back of my noggin. One Life-Flight chopper ride ($20k) and two brain surgeries, plus a free-to-me Staph-A infection ($250k+) later, my sense of smell is history, along with my short term memory.
I donated my bike to the Rescue Squad that saved my bacon, after I had it repaired.
No big deal, we were just going to look around our new condo’s golf course after visiting my parents. I don’t need no stinkin helmet, says the knucklehead who got to show my craniotomy scars to the kids in my neighborhood, and pass out some helmets to convince the kids they were useful.
Blink of an eye🤦🏻‍♂️
