So, I stroll into the gunshop today and start browsing. Hanging on the rack is a 457 VPT . You know I was coming out of there with that thing! This is the version as most of you know with the carbon fiber Manners stock. I couldn't wait to get it home and then to the range. I ran a couple of patches down the bore, and grabbed a scope off my other rifle. Other than that it's just like it came off the rack. Below is the first 15 rounds (Tac 22) through the gun at 50 yards no adjustments at all. For reference a dime will fit inside that first ring.

I was thinking this one might be a good one. Before I was done (hot as H$$$) shooting I had shot my personal best 50 yard group. 385" OD See below.

Can you tell I am excited. Center X and Eley both shot well. I didn't have any R50 with me but I am anxious to try that . By the way the factory test target wasn't to impressive so probably not a good indicator. The Manners stock really rides the rest very well. It's not the prettiest thing to look at but I sure do like the way it shoots. The trigger with no adjustments (the way it was shot today) was 3.5# on my Lyman digital gauge. So I will work on adjusting that tomorrow. More photos below.

I think the 457 MTR version was discontinued last year (I bought one). Looks very similar though, think the same stock in different colors

You made me double check … they replaced the 2021 MTR model’s Manners with one with an adjustable cheek piece. For ‘22 it looks like they offer 3 sku’s with MTR barrels … the original MTR and then the VPT Manners stocked and VPC chassis rifle. I’ve only seen the original MTR in person and then it was already sold … they do not sit on the shelf long of if at all.

Does that one have the MTR upgraded chamber?

So this one does not have the MTR chamber. It is a 2020 model per the serial number. I have a 20" MTR barrel on a 455 and it shoots pretty good but not as good as the above gun. I have some trouble closing the bolt on Center X when using the MTR barrel. From what I have seen so far I would not buy another MTR. In my limited expierence the MTR barrel is not that much better than the Varmint barrel, if any at all.

That is excellent! These are phenomenal rifles. with good glass, a 20 moa base, and some excellent coaching from @JBoyette we could get hits fairly well out to 400 yards. Congratulations on your set up.

How big a difference in accuracy of the Varmint Chamber vs the Match Chamber?

I know the Match has tighter tolerance which should have some impact.

So far I have shot the VPT better than the match chamber 455 that I have. But really it comes down to finding the ammo it likes. The standard Varmint chamber seems to be less picky about ammo than the match chamber. Also could be that I'm just not good enough to take advantage of the match chamber. LOL.

That goes for all 22s, finding that lot # yours likes.

457s are so hard to find, I’m considering that Varmint Precision Trainer since it’s hard to find the Pro Varmint, and that Manners would be a stock I would want to upgrade to.

Last time I was in the gun shop in Thomasville they had a pro-varmint on the wall.

How does barrel length influence accuracy in these rifles as they offer quite a few barrel options?

Shot a couple of cards today (my first attempts) with Eley semi auto precision on the left and Center X on the right. Still shooting with the heavy trigger, but my Yodave kit came in the mail. Looking forward to getting that installed and trying again.

22 barrel length is a weird discussion. 16” should be all it takes to fully burn. 18” is supposedly the sweet spot, but lots swear by 20”. I know you lose FPS though with the longer barrels.

I think this might be the one I go after vs the pro Varmint. But have to make room for it lol.

I guess it comes down to MTR and not MTR

Did a little work to my 457 VPT today. First I pulled the bolt out and disassembled it. Spent some time polishing up the firing pin with a stone, sandpaper, and final polishing with Simichrome and Miracle Cloth. Got everything back together without to much trouble. ( and it actually worked ) By that time my new Timney Trigger was delivered by FedX. I decided to go this route instead of a spring kit. I have used Timney Triggers before and read several good reviews. Simple install. The trigger is adjustable down to 10 ounces. I am in the 12-15 range and it passed the safety test. Very happy with it and will do some testing next week weather permitting. Take a look at Timney if you need a trigger, there are several good videos out there.

I picked up a 457 American last week, hope to.shoot it tomorrow.
It is the suppressor ready 20" with plastic stock. Lighter barrel.
Only thing I dislike is the plastic stock, hope to find a take off wood from one of the current 457 guns or something better. It does have great feel and will work for hunting but just too much flex for me.
Also have a 457 varmint pro and it shoots great..

Check over on the Rimfire Central forum in the classifieds. There's usually a few take off stocks for sale.

I just bought this one. I knew the shop I frequent had one when I walked in the door. They still have a .22LR. I bought the .22WMR version becuause the wood was much better. I just got the parts changed out to convert it to .22LR. I used the DIP adapter for the mag well. I had on hand a new .22LR MTR barrel. Hope it shoots good. The wood is outstanding.

As far as the 457VPT, I would not hesitate. I have yet to hear of one that didn't shoot well. Good luck!

Scope update on the 457 VPT. Just mounted Athlon Argos BTR Gen 2 scope using Area 419 base and D3 mounts. 10-40 X 56MM. Should compliment the VPT nicely. I hope to get it dialed in tomorrow.

You end up getting this together yet?

NKD, yes it is swapped over to .22LR and using the MTR chambered barrel. It shoots really well. Center X and SK Rifle are all I have had time to try so far. I am shooting 3 CZs right now and this one is next in the rotation.

Update on the CZ 457 VPT. I swapped out the stock 16.5" barrel for the LW 20.5" barrel I had on my 455 boyd stock. Set the barrel screws @ 35 in. lbs and the action screws @ 25 in. lbs. The headspace is set at .045". Today has been a great day to shoot in NC. No wind, 57 degress and sunny. This is the first time I have tried RWS R50 in this stock/barrel combination. It produced several 5 shot .4" groups at 50 yards and a new personal best of .334"
So RWS looks good, now to find some!

You should try it. You have 3 factors covered. Great rifle, ammo that it likes and skills to match.

Where is it held? So now I have a barrel tuner installed and a Timney trigger. Is there a specific classification for mods?

Check out the above link. First post will explain everything. You shoot on your own. Its for fun but I would like to get enough shooters where we could break up into different shooting abilities. Not there yet.
