Our daughter's cat, Riker, died suddenly tonight. He was fine. Cuddled to her. He started convulsing, meowed, then he went limp, lifeless. Gone in 60 seconds.
Zero symptoms or changes in behavior.
He was 9 years old. He's been with her through undergrad and graduate school.
She got very attached.
Our daughter just got back from a visit to the UK yesterday.
It seems that Riker was waiting for her to get home.
No idea what the cause is. We'll never know.

Very sorry. That Is a very sad story. Nine, is not all that all old for a cat. Very sorry. He went on his own terms and he held off till she got to be with him. Lots of things I’d like to say, but I’ll leave it at understanding of personal grief.

Really hate hearing this man. I had a cat that I adopted when I was in my early 20's, single, living in a small little garden apartment. Had that girl for years and she was with me through marriage, having kids, moving around. She was always more like a dog than a cat at times. Would follow me around, lay with me, meet me at the door, and all that stuff. One day she had a weird sneeze, so i took her to the vet and they told me she had bone cancer that had taken most of her skull. Lost her that same day. Sticks with ya.

That is how Riker was with out daughter.
The semester she spent in the UK was hard on him. We had locked her bedroom door. Riker marked the hell out if the carpet in front of her door.
She was really attached to Riker.

Made he was too happy about her being home after nearly 3 weeks away. We went to the house to check on him. We figured that would be less stressful that bringing him to our house. He was well cared for.
Seemingly quite healthy.
Cats are very good at not showing that they’re u healthy or suffering. When Riley got diagnosed, the vet wanted to terminate him right then, but my wife said that wasn’t her decision and brought him hoMe. He had a good 9+ months, with my parents coming and feeding him Cheetos and getting pretzels, with dip of course. I would cook him a fried egg with cheese in the morning because he was wasting away, simply not able to consume enough from the cancer. The first time, I put i down and said, “rye rye” ad he jumped over furniture running to get it. Towards his last days, he got a McDonald‘s cheeseburger which he loved. Eventually, the cancer pinched his esophagus and he was only able to get some milk and watered yogurt down, at which point I took him for the final vet visit. Did I wait too long? As I said to the vet, while he was having more good days then bad, I would let him live, but wasn’t going to let him suffer. He died in my arms at the vet.

Later, taking Freja as a kitten and putting her on that same stainless steel table was one of the worst things I did. We’ve since moved and changed vets, but that is something that stays with you.

When we lost Tucker (my avatar) first the dog got sick, then Freja got sick, then Tucker caught it on a Friday night. By Monday AM, he was non responsive and died on the way to the vet, but he saved me from having to do the deed.

@fishgutzy not trying to hijack the thread or make it about me, just trying to relate some understanding about how it can be so sudden. They’re with you long enough to become fixtures, only to depart too early.

No worries. Other pet stories are a reminder that life happens.
Personally, I don't attached to pets, not since our English Sheep dog got run over by the town dump truck in front of the house. I was 11 or 12 at the time.
But my daughter gets very attached. On top of this, her husband's grandfather passed two weeks before Christmas. Two significant losses for her in a short period.

We got 2 kittens at the same time. My daughter named them Riker and Picard. Yes, she is a Star Trek NG fan. Picard is with our son.
Our first three cats were named Tasha, Riley, and Tucker after Star Trek characters.

The three we have now are named Freja, Loki, and Odin.

Sorry for your loss.

Had a similar experience with our cat a few years back. Odd meowing woke us; I picked her up to see what was up. Convulsed for 30 seconds or so and went limp. Gone. Still bothers my wife; ant time our current cat sneezes or anything out of the ordinary wife goes on high alert.

Prayers for your daughter; may she find peace and acceptance.

We have two dogs. One is going on 14. The other closing in on 10. They are amazingly sensitive dogs and natural fluffy therapy creatures.
They will spend weekend with her stating this weekend.
The two have been pack mates for as long as we have had the younger mutt.
The 10 yo is a white and tan mutt. Black lab Aussie shep mix. At 50 pounds, she looks like a miniature Great Pyrenees.
