Kid is 16 and actually doesn't get her license till November. Been looking at Carmax for her and most of the cars in our price range were 2015's with 15-40 thousand miles on them. Had her test drive a few of them and she really liked the Subaru impreza. I figured I would wait and find the right deal. Well when I checked a Subaru dealership online a few weeks ago I saw a 2018 impreza with 2,000 miles on it and was listed for only 200 more then the CarMax cars would be after tax, title & tags were thrown in. Went that day, drove it and then told the guy I will pay a dollar more then they were asking for it, all in cash and that would be OTD. I did have to bend a tad and throw in 250 more but think I didn't do too bad.
The tears of joy when we surprised our Daughter was worth a lot more then the extra 250...

Both my daughters had permits until they were 20, no need for a car as they both went to UNC Charlotte.
First two years was expensive for oldest daughter, then in third year it dropped big time comparable to what my
wife and I pay to drive our old 1999 cars. $2,400 a year for oldest until the price drop, liability only.
Have different policy now with same carrier, younger is Jr. and costs me $150 a month for her but she has no car on campus.
Both have no tickets or any fender benders.

I don't know yet since she doesn't get her license till November but I am hearing about an extra 100 a month.

She will be a new, primary driver. Probably $150-200 a month. That’s what ours was going to be. Sold the truck she didn’t want so she’s an occasional driver and it’s about $100 a month. Having a specific car for her to drive raises the price. Go figure.

Always glad to see a good kid (I assume) get rewarded. I remember giving our son his truck this summer. Wow! Yes, it is worth it. After all, they are why we do all of this crap. All I need is a wife who loves me, good kids (the kids are fond of me as well) and enough money to feed my guns, watching them grow and occasionally sharing things like this makes it all worth it.

A good day indeed. Congrats.

She is a good kid. Honor roll student but that not bragging it's just what is expected in our household. She knows if her grades drop so will those keys right into my fat little hands. It is why we work our butts off so we can provide the best for them.

What insurance company? That is high.
We had two newer vehicles, both 2010, and later the Veloster, two teens 300/500, full coverage, plus a $1M umbrella and it didn't cost that much.

Who did you get the umbrella policy through and about how much do they run? Definitely want to do something like this.

Must carry full coverage and max liability (300/500) on the cars. My $1M umbrella is an additional $200/year.
We use State Farm.

Thanks for the info. State Farm dropped our house insurance on us. we had 3 claims (roof hail damage, two water issues) in 20 years with them. They also tried to blackball us so others would not touch us. We are now with Erie and got more coverage on our home for a better rate. Our auto insurance stayed about the same.
Not trying to say you should change just telling you my experience.

Great choice of car and awesome gift! I had an Impreza base and a WRX, both were excellent cars and held their value extremely well. That’s why the carmax cars weren’t much cheaper than the dealer’s.

I have Travelers, changed the policy to one more modern with college student over 100 miles from home,
what gets expensive is the collision and comprehensive, the liability is higher with new driver.
I also have umbrella policy for last two years. Key is no tickets and safe driving.
My 23 yr old pays what my wife pays for liablililty. I pay a few bucks more, the male surcharge.;)

Plus buying new gets you manufacturer warranty vs other options at used lots.

You made two great choices in one purchase: getting her a Subaru (we have a Forester and a WRX), and getting her a car that is practically new. The last thing any student at any level needs is drama with their transportation. That should be the only car you ever need to buy for her.

We had cash set aside to buy our daughter a decent used car when she got her permit. When the time actually came, we decided to buy new, and that cash covered half of a new 2012 Honda Fit Sport. We sucked it up and financed the rest over 24 months, so it was paid for by the time she graduated from high school. That car has now taken her through college, and we just moved her to grad school. That car will easily last her through grad school, post-doc, and the first couple of years of her career.

It's great to be done with car buying for the kid. She can get the next one for herself.

Yes, have had two foresters and a Baja here so we Love the Subaru's too. My first thought was to give her my 2013 Honda CR-V but that has about 145,000 miles on it and by the time she is a year or two into college it might start needing some repairs. I decided to go this route because it should last her past college without any costs besides regular maintenance and I can sleep better knowing she won't be broke down on a highway somewhere.
Yes, next ones on her but even if it only lasted 10 years it would be 2028.
