So I am about to dip my toe into this pool and I looking hard at the Dead Air Wolfman. This is going to be a 90% sub gun suppressor. It may eventually make its way to a 9mm pistol but most of its time will be on the Zenith MP5 clones and the CZ Scorpion. The tri-lug is already installed on the MP5s and I will most likely put one on the Scorpion.

I am wondering if there is a better choice out there. I am a buy it once cry once type of person if I am getting the right tool for the job but if there is a less expensive option I am interested in other suggestions. These days many of the choices are limited by availability.

Thanks in advance.

It is a sealed can and that's an issue for bullets with exposed lead.

It is a heavy duty piece of equipment.......it can take some abuse from rapid fire.

The way Dead Air did the wipe might be pointless...... Not sure without seeing it in person.

Dead Air is only a design and marketing company.........they go through a manufacturer and they have been out of some accessories/mounts for a while.

I have the older version of the Wolfman, the Wold 9SD. As far as quietness......its on par with any other good 9mm can.

The rugged Obsidian 9 is also very good choice.

Thanks the Obsidan 9 was also on the list. I am a complete suppressor noob so I need all the input I can get. I figured I would run total metal jacket bullets in it. With it being a sealed can will it have a shorter life span?

If you are shooting full auto you really need a can that you can disassemble and clean.

Look into the SMG FA can suppliers for the military. Gemtech comes to mind.

Not shooting FA.

I have not seen that one. Excuse my ignorance but "dippable"?
Able to dip it.

Dippable.
@kcult actually nailed it. :D

“the dip” is a method to clean non-aluminum suppressors...50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% white vinegar

it results in a hazardous material, but it’s an option for a sealed 17-4 silencer

Thanks so then I can just poor that into the nearest stream. :D

Neutralize with baking soda is one partial solution. Lots of people use it.

@BigWaylon What are your thoughts on the SilencerCO Octane 9 2.0?

I think it’s a solid option. Aesthetic changes and a lower price point from the original.

I do think a shorter/fatter can like the MG7K looks a lot better on a PCC. That being said, an Octane 9 is what’s on my primary HD firearm, a 7” AR9 SBR. But there weren’t any Wolfman/MG7K cans on the market at the time, or even something like the Omega 9K.

I would not purchase any DA product after the insane amount of QC issues they have been having lately.

I know the quality is supposed to be better after the switch from BPI to KG but DA still knowingly sold and distributed poorly built cans for months.

I would suggest a rugged obsidian or like @BigWaylon said the REX for PCC. If you wait the YHM R9 is also a great choice and price point. I have two of the REXs in jail that will be solely used on a mp5 clones.

I totally forgot about YHM's new products!!!!

One thing I like about them...... they were a machine shop/Manufacturer before they got into making suppressors IIRC..... doing everything in house is a big deal. I like some of the Dead Air products and concepts.....but when you don't do things yourself...... you will have some issues. This was one of the issues when Silencerco had the breakup and Dead Air was formed.

A potential issue for Dead Air's Business Structure........ they go through a manufacturer who has multiple clients. DA may not be their priority, the manufacturer may have other clients who are their bread and butta.......so DA may get pushed to the side here and there. I don't know this for a fact.... but their old manufacturer was a problem. The new one.... we don't really know yet because the switch just got going early this year.

Another potential issue when outsourcing..... if your manufacturer isn't an enthusiast of your products...... there can be issues in one form or another because they may not understand the form/fit/function of your products or easily communication issues. With YHM they might have a better chance of correcting an issue quicker. It's not a phone call/email from a manager to another manager to an engineer to production, which can wind up in total BS. With YHM, it's a walk out onto the production floor.

This is so weird. @amnesia

it’ll let me capture one like yours above:

but if I scroll down to the R9 pic like I posted earlier, and grab a screenshot, it won’t upload.

I shoot an old Gemtech Raptor II 40 on my 9mm and 10mm MP5's but it's sealed and some day I'll have to jail break it. I'll never buy a sealed can again and cleaning with the "dip" sucks.

Why not a Griffin Resistance or Revolution?

Man awesome info everyone. The R9 is intriguing. What do you think the street price will be?

It’ll probably be $100 or so off list. YHM shows $449. Hansohn has it listed on their site for $340.

Here is an octane 45k on my mp5 AR.

I thought about an Octane 45 that could spend some time on 1911s as well. So many choices.
My first can is a rugged obsidian 45. I have used that on pretty much everything from my scorpion to my Glock 43 to subsonic 300blk. The biggest lie I told myself is that I would get a can that can do 90% of what I wanted then I’d get a rim fire can. Now I sit here with more cans than finished hosts while I have two of the Rex in jail and planning on getting a few YHM R9s.

I feel you. I really think that I want one dedicated for the subguns. I can get a trilug attachment for the Scorpion and swap it on and off those guns pretty easily. That will be its 90% purpose. From there I might get another dedicated pistol can. From there maybe a 556 can. I really don't shoot a lot of calibers. I am also one of the few people I have encountered who shoot a fair amount be almost never shoot 22LR. I know I will probably eat my words but I don't see me needing more than 3 cans. LOL

The more and more I look at the YHM @ $340 it seems like it would fit the bill perfectly that or I might suck it up and get a Obsidian9.

You will need to buy a Nielsen device to run the R9 on a pistol if I’m remembering correct. My rugged obsidian 45 has been my dedicated pistol and was my main scorpion suppressor for a while so I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Yeah that is my understanding but I might be wrong. What I am thinking of doing is buying the R9 for the subguns and then the Obsidian 45 for the pistols. I would just need a extra piston for 9mm. How much better would the 9mm Obsidian be over the 45 shooting 9mm?

See how one became 2.... LOL

“In general”...shooting a small caliber through a larger caliber can is usually a wash.

You lose some suppression due to an oversized bore, and gain some from a larger internal volume. But the tone is often deeper with the larger can so it might sound better to some people. But it’s also heavier and longer than the dedicated caliber can.

I really like my Wolfman on my Stribog, other PCC's, 9mm handguns, AR-15, and 300BO. I've never worried about cleaning it other than using the AR to do it for me.
