I live in Orange County. I was told a few days ago that it takes THREE months to get a death certificate anywhere in NC. Sounds like BS to me. Anybody here have any experience with this? I'm 86 and I suspect that in the not too distant future somebody is going to need mine.

Probably depends on the county. Surry provided one in 2 days. It may also depend on cause of death.

The funeral director will receive it from the Medical examiner, then it's given to NO kin.
It can take awhile, and life insurance, estate etc etc is all in limbo.

Next day here In Catawba County. My SIL passed unexpectedly last Thursday, and her husband had it Friday.

In Guilford County in 2010, it took about a week, if memory serves. I got 6 copies, everybody wants one with the embossed seal, banks, brokers, insurance, etc..

If death was possibly undetermined or involving toxicology, or autopsy related and tox screens involved-the TOXICOLOGY can take months (of course I'm used to being told CSI/NCIS/etc. gets in a an hour and folks know better) before a Death Certificate will be issued. Could this be the case in the one mentioned? I know of some that took 6 months-ish.

Are you asking about a recent death or one that happened some time in the past?

On second thought, it shouldn't matter, really.

.

When the wife died the funeral home had it the next week from the county, get at least 10 copies cause you will need them for banks, dmv, creditors, ect

If a toxicology report is needed, it can be awhile. I waited 6 months on one. The preliminary certificate came in about a week or little less.

I got Mom's within a few days from the funeral home. This was Scotland county.

Keep clear records of every creditor you notified of the death. Six months after my mom's estate was closed Duke sent a bill for $900. We told them sorry, you will have to write it off. Estate is closed, money has been dispersed. You should have acted sooner.

Guilford County, had both my parents' certificates within 3 days. 10 years or so ago for my Mom and I got 10. Pretty much used all but one or two. Last year with my Dad, I again got 10 and have like 9 left. Seems more places were willing to make a copy of the original for their files. I guess with the advances in scanning technology, etc. If they have seen an original, all they needed was a copy.

edit: but for the cost, get more than you think you will need.

Wake, two months ago, took about two weeks, but my wife died 12/17 so I’m sure the holidays delayed it.

I know my wife got that run around last year dealing with her Dads estate. You can call around to the NC Public Records offices until you find one that will give you one on a walk in basis. We drove to Zebulon or Wendell somewhere and picked up a copy the same afternoon.

It's idiotic but such is dealing with incompetent government bureaucrats .
