We are listing our house for sale in June, and this was a project we saved for last. This deck was refurbed when we were in the house less than a year. It's 15 years old, but the 2x12 frame is stout and in good shape. I like refurbs because there's no permit cost for a homeowner and I can scrounge decking from a builder friend when he's feeling generous. This weekend was time for removing railing and improving the floor. Next weekend we will build nice railings and maybe a gate.
2 years ago I flipped boards, and pressure washed with bleach but I didn't do as much repair work. The semi-solid stain didn't last long maybe 18 months. Also, I removed the railings and we are treating the deck floor with Cabot Deck Correct. It is a thick paint that fills in cracks, smoothes splintered wood and improves traction.
So far I have about $50 worth of lumber and $30 worth of screws. Today I finished the last few boards and I washed the deck with something that's supposedly plant-safe called 30 seconds. There is some bleach but my boss raved about it. $20 at home depot and applied with the pressure wash suction line.
